CLASS SERIES CONCEPT

This classification series defines speech-language pathology work performed at Harborview Medical Center. Positions in this job assess patient status, evaluate, plan, and administer speech and language services.

BASIC FUNCTION

Provide professional speech and language services to individuals with typical and complex swallowing, cognitive and communicative disabilities such as cognitive communication disorders, dysphagia, language or articulation disorders, hearing loss or impairments, dysfluency, voice disorders, or motor speech disorders.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The Speech-Language Pathologist 2 is distinguished from the Speech-Language Pathologist 1 in that the former mentors staff as a subject matter expert in a specialized area, participates in student programming, program development and quality improvement projects.

TYPICAL WORK

Independently evaluate hearing, language, cognition, swallowing, communication and speech abilities and identify areas of impairment using various diagnostic tools for patients with typical and complex diagnoses;

Develop treatment programs in collaboration with physicians, other speech-language pathologists, audiologists, psychologists, dietitians, respiratory therapists, social workers, physical and occupational therapists, counselors and/or teachers;

Use appropriate treatment methods for receptive and expressive language disorders, cognitive communication disorders, swallowing disorders, articulation and voice disorders, stuttering and develop alternative means of communication (e.g., language board and sign language) for typical as well as complex patients;

As a subject matter expert in a specialized area, provide advice to others, mentor staff, and provide objective feedback;

Direct and evaluate speech-language pathology students and/or participate in student programming;

Take the lead in defined program development, process improvement, or quality improvement projects for the department as assigned by a Speech-Language Pathologist 3 or manager;

Perform the duties of a Speech-Language Pathologist 1; and

Perform other duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Licensed by the State of Washington as a Speech Language Pathologist,

AND

Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology or Communicative Disorders or equivalent degree approved by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association,

AND

A Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech/Language and Hearing Association,

AND

Two years of experience as a speech-language pathologist.
