DEFINITION
Perform journey-level work in forming, fabrication, and installation of sheet metal components.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Positions in this class perform a variety of journey-level duties in skilled sheet metal repair and fabrication work.
TYPICAL WORK
Lay out, fabricate, and install standard and custom-made gutters, downspouts, vent covers, hatch covers, grills, louvers, ducts, and flashing;
Lay out, fabricate, install, maintain, or repair stove pipes, grates, guards, chimney caps, machine guards, sinks, incinerators, screens, metal hoppers, shields, roofing and sheet metal parts and components;
Repair metal windows and doors; form and weld, solder, braze, or silver solder a variety of metal objects, fixtures, equipment, and structures;
Operate hand and power brakes, forming rods, squaring shears, elbow machines, folding machines, emery wheels, power punches, and other power and hand tools;
Estimate quantity of material and hours of labor required to perform various jobs;
Service, install, and repair oil burners, fire boxes, ventilation and heating ducts;
Inspect ventilation and exhaust systems for fire hazard, hazardous fumes, and general effectiveness of operation;
Develop preliminary cost estimates for installations and repairs;
Drive service truck as required; load and unload materials and supplies;
May lead and instruct helpers as required;
May perform work in other trades;
Perform related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - UW Contract Classified
Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a sheet metal mechanic; OR full journey status as a sheet metal mechanic in a union; OR four years' applicable work experience. Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis. Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license may be required.
Examination Requirements:
A job element examination (including written, E & T and oral components) scored on the basis of job related experience, training, skill, ability and other elements which are established through job analysis.
