8862 (WFSE Skilled Trades)

DEFINITION

Perform skilled installation, maintenance, and repair of all types of roofing.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Positions in this class perform a variety of journey-level duties in skilled roofing and related work.

TYPICAL WORK

Check roof areas, roof drains and gutters to determine serviceability and repair needs; clean debris as required; locate and repair roof and related leaks;

Prepare subroofing by removing old surfaces and repairing base for new material;

Install flashings for vent pipes, ducts, fans, air-conditioners and other machines or structures installed on roofs;

Inspect application of new roofs by contractors;

Install or repair all types of roofing including asphalt, composition, corrugated metal, slate, tile, etc.;

Operate a variety of power and hand tools including power hoists;

Estimate materials and time required for completion of jobs and projects;

Maintain power and hand tools as required; may lead and instruct helpers as required;

May perform work in other trades;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - UW Contract Classified

Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a roofer OR, full journey status as a roofer in a union; OR four years' applicable work experience. Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis. Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license may be required.

Examination Requirements:

The examination (including written, E & T and oral components) will consist of a scored evaluation of the applicant's training and experience as a roofer or a roofer's helper, knowledge of roofing techniques, equipment and materials and safety precautions and ability to perform skilled installation, maintenance and repair of roofing.
