8846 (WFSE Skilled Trades)

DEFINITION

Operate machine tools to close tolerances in fabricating and repairing parts and components.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Positions allocated to this class are distinguished by the requirement for performing journey-level work by operation of machine tools such as engine lathes, knee mills, shapers, grinders, radial drills, etc., working from blueprints, sketches, specifications, and verbal instructions.

TYPICAL WORK

Repair or rebuild existing machines, equipment, and apparatus by utilizing machine tools and hand tools;

Perform benchwork to fit and assemble precision parts to apparatus and equipment; use hand and machine tapping equipment, files, scrapers, etc.;

Perform welding, brazing, soldering, heat treating, and tempering of metals;

Make jigs, fixtures, and devices; grind and sharpen milling cutters, special shop tools; repair and maintain shop tools and equipment;

Develop new equipment and parts to revise, improve and correct equipment and apparatus;

Lay out and plan work sequence; make calculations and determine procedures for fabrication and forming processes;

May perform work in other trades;

Lead and instruct helpers as required;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - UW Contract Classified

Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a machinist OR full journey status as a machinist in a union; OR four years applicable work experience. Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis. Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license may be required.

Examination Requirements:

The examination (including written, E & T and oral components) will consist of a scored evaluation of the applicant's training and experience as a machinist or machinist helper, knowledge of machinist techniques and equipment, ability to work from blueprints, sketches, specifications and verbal instructions, and the ability to operate precision machine tools to close tolerances in fabricating and repairing parts and components.
