CLASS SERIES CONCEPT
Perform operating and maintenance work on the University of Washington electrical distribution system on the Seattle campus.
BASIC FUNCTION
As a working lead, lead and work with high voltage electricians at the University of Washington Power Plant, to perform operating and maintenance work on high voltage generation, control, transformation and distribution systems.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Regularly assign, instruct and check the work of journey high voltage electricians. Positions in this class are distinguished by the requirement to operate, troubleshoot, install, and repair high voltage electrical generation, control, transformation and distribution systems carrying more than 750 volts up to 26,400 volts.
TYPICAL WORK
Lead and assigned personnel in the performance of high voltage electrical work;
Serve as power dispatcher having designated responsibility for performing high voltage switching operations and issuing safe-work clearances.
Prepare high voltage systems to be worked on by contractors, including de-energizing high voltage equipment, installing protective grounds, issuing line clearances, and monitoring procedures utilized by contractors.
Assure assigned personnel observe and follow safety precautions and rules; provide safety training to personnel;
Identify and implement daily operation strategies for campus electrical distribution system to ensure continuous and reliable electrical service;
Respond to emergency situations such as power outages in order to minimize or prevent loss of property, damage to research activities, or disruption to life safety systems;
Plan and coordinate electrical shutdowns for maintenance and construction activities;
Implement maintenance programs;
Splice various types of high voltage multiphase power cable; perform straight splices, joints for branch lines, and fittings for terminal connections;
Install, connect, operate and maintain a variety of electrical equipment including primary power distribution/transmission cables and equipment, portable engine generators, transformers, and high voltage switches;
Order parts and supplies; prepare, assign and track work orders.
Develop work plans, methods, and procedures to be followed by trades personnel;
Perform the duties of a Power Plant Electrician - High Voltage
Perform duties in accordance with safety standards and procedures outlined in WAC 296-45;
Perform other duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a lineworker or equivalent AND two years working with 2,000 volt or higher electrical equipment at full journey level status AND six months experience leading journey level high voltage electricians. Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license may be required.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge of: standard practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment of electrical trade; electrical codes; safety precautions; basic computer skills.
Ability to: work from blueprints, plans, and sketches; estimate materials and time needed to complete jobs; use hand and power tools.
