BASIC FUNCTION

Provides technical nutritional care to patients with low to moderate risk dietetic complexity or needs.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Under general supervision from registered dietitian, provides technical assistance in nutritional care of patients. Work assigned are routine and less complex, such as providing nutritional care to patients with refluxes, allergies or on a low sodium diet. May assist registered dietician on complex cases.

TYPICAL WORK

Assign patients screened at low to moderate nutrition complexity; interviews for food preferences and to determine need for modified diet or other nutritional interventions; coordinates care and recommendations with registered dietitian;

Collect and utilize all medical data, health history, and laboratory reports to evaluate and manage the nutritional care of patients assigned; document care provided in the medical records;

Provide appropriate nutrition education based on patient diagnosis;

Respond to nutritional care questions from the public; provide diet counseling and therapeutic diet planning;

Serve as liaison between patients, medical staff, and room service and provides input related to patient and retail menus;

Monitor food service for conformance with quality standards;

Develop and conduct training for inpatients, food service personnel, medical staff etc., regarding nutritional issues, modified diets, safe and proper food handling, personal hygiene and safety;

Perform related duties as required;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

An Associate Degree from an accredited program offering training as a dietetic technician and Registration as a diet technician

OR

Equivalent education/experience.
