BASIC FUNCTION

Supervise Hospital Dentistry Assistant Specialists and other support staff providing patient services and participating in teaching activities in a dental clinic. Develop and implement dental clinic programs and procedures.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

With delegated authority, interview and recommend selection of applicants, conduct training, assign and schedule work, act upon leave requests, conduct annual performance evaluations and recommend disciplinary action. Under general direction, coordinate and supervise activities in dental clinics. Positions in this classification must supervise Hospital Dentistry Assistant Specialists.

TYPICAL WORK

Develop, coordinate and evaluate the effectiveness of dental clinic volunteer and trainee programs;

Develop and implement ongoing in-service training programs;

Coordinate interdepartmental clinical activities and confer with individuals, groups and agencies outside of the institution on matters related to patient care;

Assist in the development and presentation of didactic material;

Evaluate requests for equipment, supplies and medication; make purchase recommendations;

Orient clinic staff and students in use of equipment such as cavitrons, X-ray machines and/or biofeedback equipment;

Coordinate staff functions related to dental clinic activities such as dispensary, X-ray, and/or sterilization;

Develop and coordinate the implementation of standardized procedures for use in one or more clinics;

Determine staff assignments based upon evaluation of needs in several clinic areas;

Prepare and administer clinic support budgets; prepare cost estimates, fiscal projections and reports;

May perform the duties of a Dental Clinic Supervisor I;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Five years of experience as a dental assistant or supervisor in a general practice or dental school clinic, or equivalent, to include at least one year of experience supervising dental assistants. Completion of an accredited dental assistant training program AND current certification as a dental assistant (CDA) or the ability to obtain same within six months.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Legal Requirement

Registration with the State of Washington as a Dental Assistant.
