BASIC FUNCTION
Conduct clinical diagnostic eye examinations and procedures; assist with minor surgical procedures; use specialized equipment; assist with the development of patient education materials.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Under direct supervision, perform clinical diagnostic eye examinations and procedures, such as refractometry, potential visual acuity and Humphrey visual field testing, tonopen, pachy; learn to use and use specialized ophthalmic equipment, such as the Goldmann visual field equipment, ultrasound machines and probes; may assist with the development of patient education materials.
TYPICAL WORK
Initiate and perform refractometry when indicated by vision screening;
Schedule and independently perform tests such as potential visual acuity, visual field determinations, and pachymetry; report results to physician;
Review medical records and note need for specific testing prior to physician examination;
May assist with the development of patient educational materials;
Develop advanced skills to be able to perform the work of an Ophthalmic Technician 2;
Under physician direction administer topical medications, such as eye drops, ointments, and irrigating solutions to the eye;
Perform related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - UW Contract Classified
Completion of an approved ophthalmic technician program, ophthalmic assistant, Certified Ophthalmic Assistant
OR
equivalent education/experience.
