BASIC FUNCTION
Prepare patients for and perform complex pulmonary function tests; record data for analysis.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Under general supervision, perform complex pulmonary function tests such as sleep studies and ventilation testing for intensive care patients.
TYPICAL WORK
Operate pulmonary function equipment while conducting tests such as sleep studies and ventilation testing on intensive care patients;
Assist physicians in highly complex procedures such as fiber-optic bronchoscopies and progressive exercise studies;
Consult with medical staff regarding testing and research procedures;
Assist higher-level technologists with equipment calibration, quality control checks, supply inventory and ordering;
Draw and analyze arterial blood gas specimens;
Screen spirometric tests in outpatient clinics or at bedside;
Administer aerosolized bronchodilators;
Administer topical or subcutaneous local anesthetics;
Collect data; calculate and report results;
Schedule patients for tests;
Perform related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - UW Contract Classified
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS - Classified Non-Union
Two years of experience as a Pulmonary Function Technologist I or equivalent AND certification as a Pulmonary Function Technologist by the National Board for Respiratory Care.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
