BASIC FUNCTION

Lead Medical Laboratory Scientists and Medical Laboratory Scientist Trainees; evaluate the performance of fellows, residents and students; develop and evaluate methodologies and procedures.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Regularly assign, instruct and check the work of others. Lead the professional technical work performed by Medical Laboratory Scientists and Medical Laboratory Scientist Trainees in a section or division of a clinical laboratory and coordinate development and evaluation of new laboratory tests and procedures. Must lead at least 1.0 FTE (or an equivalent combination of part-time positions) of subordinates at least at the Medical Laboratory Scientist 1 level.

TYPICAL WORK

Evaluate and document the performance of post-doctoral fellows, residents, students and Medical Laboratory Scientists during training;

Review and evaluate test results; consult with physicians concerning critical or abnormal findings;

Assure quality control standards and competencies are met and documented; troubleshoot methods and instrumentation;

Develop and evaluate new methodologies; write, review and revise technical procedures;

Consult with Clinical Laboratory Supervisor, Health Services Manager and Faculty Director in matters relating to purchasing, budgeting and cost analysis; inform faculty of unusual technical problems and help establish laboratory policies;

Coordinate efforts with the Laboratory Safety Officer in ensuring a safe working environment;

May provide input to the supervisor in the interviewing, hiring and evaluation of employees; may counsel, mentor and provide immediate feedback to section or division staff and recommend disciplinary action to the supervisor/manager; may participate in the disciplinary action process.;

May develop and implement diagnostic algorithms for specimen analysis;

May be responsible for accreditation preparation and ongoing accreditation readiness;

Continuing education: keep ASCP or other certifications up to date per guidelines of National Organization;

Perform duties of Medical Laboratory Scientist 2 or Medical Laboratory Scientist 1;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Accredited Bachelor's Degree in Medical Laboratory Science OR equivalent education/experience

AND

Medical Laboratory Science certification with the American Society for Clinical Pathology or equivalent, or certification with a specialty organization appropriate to the laboratory division

AND

Three years of professional experience including one year as a Medical Laboratory Scientist 2 or equivalent
