CARDIAC TECHNOLOGIST LEAD

BASIC FUNCTION

Lead Cardiac Technologists; conduct a variety of technical procedures in a catheterization laboratory and assist with and monitor invasive procedures and studies; monitor and operate equipment; present inservices and participate in research projects.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Regularly assign, instruct and check the work of others. Under general direction, assist in coordinating the operation of the laboratory and training new staff and cardiac fellows.

TYPICAL WORK

Operate a wide variety of x-ray equipment to produce a filmed record such as cine pulse, cut-film changer, and high resolution recording systems;

Develop 35mm films maintaining film quality control standards;

Perform calibration on and operate a variety of physiological equipment and transducers to record and monitor electrocardiograms and blood pressures in various heart chambers;

Perform technical aspects and assist in cardiac procedures such as heart catheterization, thermodilution studies, pacemaker studies, transeptal procedures, intra-aortic balloon pump procedures, angioplasty procedures, angiography studies, heart biopsy and streptokinase studies;

Assist in collecting, recording, and calculating hemodynamic data such as Fick and VO2 cardiac outputs and oximeter saturations;

Administer patient care services such as intravenous therapy and medication, wound dressing and incision care, oxygen and suction; prepare patients for examinations including surgical skin prep, explanation of procedures and physicians' orders; prepare and set up surgical trays and materials for the procedures utilizing sterile techniques; monitor patient's condition during transport to unit;

Assist with the instruction of fellows, trainees, and students in application and techniques of cardiac catheterization;

Review and report daily operational status of equipment; document malfunctions and initiate requests for repair service;

Assist in evaluation new products and equipment and in formulating new techniques;

Order laboratory supplies from vendors;

Present inservices and instruction regarding cardiac examinations to new staff and students;

Participate in research projects employing cardiac specialty;

Assist in direction of radiation protection practices;

Perform the duties of Cardiac Technologists;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - UW Contract Classified
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS - Classified Non-Union

Registration by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in Diagnostic Radiology or as an Invasive Cardiovascular Technologist AND two years of experience as a Cardiac Technologist or equivalent positions AND certification in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation within four months from date of hire.

Work experience which demonstrates comparable skills may substitute for the registration requirement.
