CLASS SERIES CONCEPT
Process and resolve patient accounts receivable.
BASIC FUNCTION
Process select activities related to the patient accounts receivable. Patient accounting functions supported include billing, follow-up, collections, incoming inquiries, audit resolutions, cash applications, credit balance resolutions, and registration updates.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Under general supervision, perform specialized clerical duties in support of patient accounting functions requiring knowledge of third-party payers and patient accounting systems. Positions in this classification have minimal contact with patients, clinical support staff, or third-party payers.
TYPICAL WORK
Post adjustments to patient accounts according to departmental procedures;
Post and balance daily remittances to patient accounts; post allowances and adjustments accompanying cash remittances;
Screen, scan and process incoming correspondence to ensure routing to appropriate work queues/units;
Print, distribute and mail claims; process returned mail;
Print medical records and itemizations as required for claims submission;
Produce and print account summaries, itemizations, and other documents as required, in response to requests from attorneys and others;
Perform data entry; document activities accurately in all applicable systems, and in accordance with departmental policies and procedures;
Maintain confidentiality of information, including protected health information (PHI);
Participate in and attend meetings and training as required;
May assist in orienting and training new staff;
May occasionally speak to patients, clinical staff, or third-party payers; and
Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High School graduation or equivalent AND one year of experience in patient accounting, customer service, or a related office environment

Equivalent education/experience.

Classification series encompasses the work formerly performed by Patient Financial Services Specialist 1 (18081), Patient Financial Services Specialist 2 (18082), and Patient Financial Services Supervisor (18083). The Patient Financial Services series was inactivated at the effective date of the Patient Account Representative series.
