BASIC FUNCTION
Perform complex procedures for services such as flow cytometry, renal biopsy, electron microscopy, autopsy, molecular pathology, and immunocytochemistry.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Under general direction, perform complex procedures in a specialty pathology service or in a combination of general histology and specialty pathology service(s).
TYPICAL WORK
Perform functions in anatomic services, such as flow cytometry, renal biopsy, electron microscopy, autopsy, molecular pathology, and immunocytochemistry;
Implement, monitor, and perform quality control of specimens; determine disposition of improperly handled specimens; identify problems, take corrective action, notify supervisor and monitor follow-up solutions;
Develop and assess the impact of new procedures in the laboratory; implement and evaluate the requirements to comply with CAP (College of American Pathologists) standards;
Train new employees in pathology procedures, preparation of reagents, and in the proper use and theory of laboratory instrumentation;
Perform procedures in methacrylate or resin embedded specimens;
Provide thick sections to aid pathologist in diagnosis;
Provide thin sections; assess representative areas on a subcellular level with an electron microscope and photograph for use in diagnosis; develop and print photographs;
Direct the performance of, or independently perform, autopsy to include evisceration and dissection; instruct residents and medical students in autopsy procedures; coordinate cremation of infants; facilitate autopsies from referring institutions; perform gross specimen photography; sort and classify specimens;
Process specimens, selecting appropriate fluorescent labeling; perform flow cytometric analysis, independently selecting appropriate parameters and optics;
Interpret cell cycle data and histograms; correlate findings from supporting literature with patient history and tumor type to provide flow cytometric prognosis;
Perform molecular pathology tests and interpret results; provide results to pathologist for reporting; perform and interpret tissue typing analysis; research and develop new assays;
Select the antibody panel necessary to determine diagnosis for immunocytochemistry studies;
Perform the work of Anatomic Pathology Technician;
Perform related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - UW Contract Classified
A Bachelor's Degree with coursework in chemistry, biology and other biological sciences including microscopy AND certification, or certified within two years of date of hire, at the Technologist level by a nationally recognized certifying agency such as the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, the American Society of Clinical Laboratory Scientists or the Microscopy Society of America AND one year of clinical anatomic laboratory experience
