BASIC FUNCTION
Perform specialized, technical pharmaceutical tasks such as maintaining a narcotics vault, maintaining an automated medication distribution system and performing unit dose medication checking in a central pharmacy that supports one or more satellite pharmacies operating under the supervision of an on-site pharmacist or perform area-specific technical pharmaceutical tasks on an inpatient nursing unit or an ambulatory clinic.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Under general supervision and control of a licensed pharmacist, independently perform specialized, technical pharmaceutical functions such as unit dose medication checking, maintaining a specific area or function within the pharmacy, acting as a resource for medication distribution systems, and/or serving as a liaison for assigned nursing units or ambulatory clinics.
TYPICAL WORK
Compound and prepare medications from physician orders for oral, intravenous, suppository and topical administration;
Prepare prescriptions from physician orders;
Check the work of other pharmacy technicians after receiving certification as a technician checker.
Assist in the training of pharmacy assistants, interns, and students;
Perform documentation functions in designated areas of the pharmacy;
Assist in the preparation and documentation of the process improvement program;
Perform charging and/or billing functions;
Perform order entry of medication orders into the pharmacy computer;
Perform the duties of Pharmacy Technician I;
May perform tasks related to drug acquisition and delivery such as maintaining assigned medication stations and investigating and monitoring resolution of discrepancies;
May maintain oversight of an automated pharmaceutical distribution system including system integrity and database transactions;
May assist in monitoring clinical trials of investigational drugs including perpetual inventory logs, storage and maintenance of supplies, and accountability and auditing of study materials;
Perform related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - UW Contract Classified
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS - Classified Non-Union
Six months of experience as a Pharmacy Technician I
OR
equivalent education/experience.
LEGAL REQUIREMENTS
State of Washington Pharmacy Technician certification.
