BASIC FUNCTION

Develop and administer environmental health and accident prevention programs for employee, student, and visitor protection.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Under general direction, develop and administer major components of an institutional safety and hazard control program such as accident investigations and work site surveys for physical safety hazards. Design safety measures based upon independent assessment of hazardous practices or conditions. Develop and conduct safety training programs.

TYPICAL WORK

Develop and implement safety programs for institutional employees, students, and visitors;

Review reports and evaluate data concerning occupational injuries and public liability accidents; determine necessity and scope of further investigation;

Act as liaison between the institution and state and federal safety personnel;

Review proposals and plan for special events and activities;

Consult with management personnel to recommend solutions to safety problems; review efficacy of safety programs;

Direct the activities of a hazardous waste disposal program.

Develop and conduct educational safety programs; interpret safety codes and regulations;

May perform the duties of Safety Professional I;

May lead assigned personnel;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - UW Contract Classified
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS - Classified Non-Union

A Bachelor's Degree with major study in safety management, safety engineering, biological or physical science, or closely related field; AND three years of professional experience in environmental health and safety programs. A Master's Degree with major study in safety program management, safety engineering, or closely related field may be substituted for two years of the above professional work experience requirement.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
