CLASS SERIES CONCEPT

Perform professional fire protection engineer duties to implement an institution's fire protection program. Provide professional/technical assistance and recommend modification and revision of facilities/equipment for compliance with applicable fire prevention regulations and ordinances.

BASIC FUNCTION

Implement and maintain operation and engineering functions for an institutional fire protection division engaged in all phases of life safety, fire prevention and fire prevention activities.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

First-level class of series. Under general supervision, implement and maintain life safety and fire protection policies and procedures.

TYPICAL WORK

Implement and maintain operations and engineering functions for an institutional fire protection/prevention program;

Review all plans and specifications for new construction and modifications to institutional buildings and facilities to ensure inclusion of required life safety and fire protection features;

Provide technical guidance and code interpretations to other departments and consulting engineers;

Conduct fire protection surveys on institutional buildings and facilities and submit reports to consulting engineers;

Review all shop drawings and approve installations of fire protection systems, equipment and devices, fire alarm systems and life safety features;

Conduct operational tests and inspections on new installations to ensure compliance with plans and specifications; resolve compliance problems with city and state fire safety officials;

Plan and conduct a fire prevention program, including fire prevention instruction and drills;

Direct and coordinate fire prevention inspection programs in institutional buildings and facilities;

Direct monitoring of public events to ensure compliance with life safety requirements and crowd control;

Make detailed investigations of and maintain files regarding fires and other disasters to determine the cause, contributing factors, extent and amount of loss; report findings to supervisor with recommendations to prevent future similar events;

Develop and maintain master plan and criteria for the central fire alarm system;

May direct work of fire inspectors;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - UW Contract Classified
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS - Classified Non-Union

A Bachelor's Degree in engineering; and two years of fire protection or closely related field. Additional experience in fire protection engineering, or equivalent, may substitute, year for year, for educational requirements.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as license/certification/registration.
