CLASS SERIES CONCEPT

Promote and maintain hospital security and safety by enforcing rules and regulations to provide for the safety of patients, staff, visitors, and the facilities at University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC)-Montlake (ML) and its associated offsite clinics or University of Washington (UWMC)-Northwest (NW) and its associated offsite clinics.

BASIC FUNCTION

At UWMC-ML and its associated offsite clinics or UWMC-NW and its associated offsite clinics, supervise Campus Security Officers and other security personnel performing general duty security work to protect life and property, enforce laws and ordinances, maintain order, and prevent and investigate crime. Must supervise at least one full-time employee (1.0 FTE) or an equivalent combination of part-time employees.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

With delegated authority, interview and recommend selection of applicants, conduct training, assign and schedule work, act upon leave requests, conduct annual performance evaluations and recommend disciplinary action;

Positions allocated to this class are responsible for supervising and participating in work of security personnel at UWMC facilities.

This class is distinguished from the Campus Security Sergeant by a work location of UWMC-ML or UWMC-NW, which results in frequent contact with inmates, psychiatric and suicidal/homicidal patients, out-of-control individuals, and other mentally and medically vulnerable populations.

TYPICAL WORK

With delegated authority, interview and recommend selection of applicants, conduct training, assign and schedule work, act upon leave requests, conduct annual performance evaluations, and recommend disciplinary action;

Supervise and participate in regular patrol, inspection, and restraint duties to ensure a safe and secure environment;

Provide effective problem resolution for patients, staff, and visitors throughout the multiple departments of UWMC-ML or UWMC-NW, in both patient and non-patient areas.

Write reports covering activity of squad or shift assigned; review and correct reports of subordinate officers;

Develop written operational and daily activity policies and procedures that promote the mission of UWMC;

Provide research, reports and recommendations to management regarding security plans and their implementation;

Establish and maintain effective relations with medical professionals, police officers, firefighters, and senior management; serve as a liaison and public relations representative with patients, visitors, and staff for matters related to security and public safety;

Perform investigations as necessary, both as part of the disciplinary process and as a result of incident reports;

Evaluate conditions of equipment and facilities; determine and recommend appropriate replacement or maintenance requirements;

Perform work of a Hospital Security Officer – UWMC-ML or Hospital Security Office – UWMC-NW; and

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school graduation or equivalent; possession of a valid driver's license; two years of work experience as a campus police, public safety or security officer, or equivalent; no previous felony convictions.
