BASIC FUNCTION
Research and design historically accurate and well-constructed costumes for theatrical productions.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Apply knowledge of historical and theatrical apparel to design and create theatrical costumes. Historical periods may include, but are not limited to, Greek and Roman, Tudor, Renaissance, 17th – 18th Century, Empire, Hoop, Bustle, Victorian, Edwardian, and 20th century.
Able to distinguish, execute, and explain excellence in cut, construction, and period feel of a finished costume, such as appropriate seam placement for specific historical periods, types of stitching and hand-sewing finishing techniques.
May execute the most difficult and complex costume designs in support of the educational work of students pursuing post-graduate degrees in costume design.
Functions with a high degree of independence requiring artistic judgment, initiative, and problem solving skills related to student designer decisions.
TYPICAL WORK
Demonstrate superior proficiency in pattern draping using both the flat pattern method, and the sculptural use of fabric draping.
Research, gather information, and analyze the design of the costume, working directly with the designer, to interpret the original vision.
Apply advanced knowledge of fabric types, uses, and care. May work with rare or costly fabrics or materials.
Apply advanced understanding of period shape and knowledge of how to achieve the silhouette using contemporary means adapted for theatrical costumes.
Use in-depth understanding of costume history to create theatrical costumes.
Have extensive experience in a variety of costume construction techniques and use knowledge of various costume construction techniques, and machine and hand sewing skills, choosing the most appropriate technique and skills for a given costume situation.
Train students and staff in the specific distinguishing features of dance costumes, opera costumes, and all forms of theatrical apparel.
Maintain the integrity of the Costume Design through their interpretation of the costume sketch.
Manage time independently, manage work flow of others and self, must communicate daily with other staff, often while working under deadlines from multiple theatrical productions.
Perform the duties of a Costumer Lead.
MINIMIM QUALIFICATIONS – UW Contract Classified
Two years college training in costume or vocational sewing, pattern making, tailoring, AND 6 or more years of professional theater costuming experience.
