DEFINITION
Tune, maintain, repair and rebuild pianos and similar musical instruments.
TYPICAL WORK
Tune pianos and harpsichords by varying changes in pitch of strings utilizing a tuning hammer and other tools;
Rebuild pianos and harpsichords, including unstringing, removing and replacing string frames, repairing sound board, bridges, etc.; repair pianos by replacing, adapting, making and adjusting wood, metal, felt, leather, and plastic parts;
Diagnose quality or condition of pianos and harpsichords by inspection, testing and analyzing opinions of the musician users;
Keep records and perform related duties as required;
Use and maintain hand tools and power tools such as drill presses, sanders, grinders, power saws, etc.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - UW Contract Classified
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS - Classified Non-Union
Completion of a recognized training program as a piano technician; OR full journey status as a piano technician in the Piano Technician Guild; OR three years applicable work experience.
Vocational training may be substituted for work experience on a year-for-year basis. Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license may be required.
Examination Requirements:
A job element examination (including written, E & T and oral components) scored on the basis of job related experience, training, skill, ability and other elements which are established through job analysis.
