DEFINITION

Counsel and assist students and prospective students in planning a program of study designed to achieve their academic goals.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Positions allocated to this class have responsibility for assisting students in planning their academic program; maintaining records of students progress, and counseling those students encountering academic and/or personal problems affecting their course of study.

TYPICAL WORK

Explain course offerings and prerequisite requirements; interpret policies and regulations;

Determine eligibility for students' admission; explain course equivalence for credits earned from other schools;

Approve adding and/or dropping of courses, or withdrawals; approve exceptions to certain rules within established guidelines (i.e., approve all morning classes for students having to work afternoons:;

Check students progress toward degree; review and approve graduation applications;

Maintain records and prepare reports as required;

Answer telephone inquires and correspondence regarding entrance and degree requirements, course content, etc.;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - UW Contract Classified
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS - Classified Non-Union

Two years of college course work; or two years of general counseling, personnel or related administrative work.

EXAMINATION REQUIREMENTSS

A job element examination (including written, E & t and oral components) scored on the basis of job related experience, training, skill, ability and other elements which are established through job analysis.
