BASIC FUNCTION
With limited supervision, monitor and respond to hardware and software events generated by complex application(s), system(s), network, and environmental support equipment. Operate, maintain, and monitor system processes and hardware peripheral devices through system console(s) to ensure the readiness of robotics, print, disk, network, and other complex subsystems.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Routinely instruct, train, and review the quality of service provided by other computer support specialists. Participate in creating, maintaining, and implementing functional procedures.
TYPICAL WORK
Monitor and react to alarms generated by system consoles, hardware, and system management tools. Perform recovery and diagnostic routines documented by professional or technical staff. Maintain and configure application monitoring tools and related diagnostic and reporting procedures.
Operate, maintain, and monitor hardware peripheral devices and the supporting software tools to ensure the readiness of robotic, print, disk, network, and other complex computer subsystems.
Monitor and react to local and wide area network alarms generated from management tools. Perform network diagnostic routines documented by professional or network technical staff.
Monitor and react to environmental alarms generated from monitoring hardware and software tools that support HVAC, Uninterruptible Power Supplies, Fire Alarms, Water Detection Alarms, and Building Security Systems. Perform necessary related duties to minimize physical damage to network and computing equipment.
Report, record, and escalate problem events to the appropriate technical support staff, internal departments, departmental users, and vendor support staff.
May assist in automating job functions by implementing/using sophisticated software utilities and developing and writing high-level language programs using scripts, job control, or compiled languages. May provide system administration support for Data Center's internal servers and workstations.
Maintain, track, inventory, and coordinate the ordering of consumable computer and office supplies necessary to sustain the computing environment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - UW Contract Classified
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, or other related degree, and 1 years of experience as Computer Operator II.
OR
Or 5 years of work experience in a large enterprise IT environment, demonstrating continued growth in progressively more complex technologies (e.g. system administration; scripting, programming; and networking principles, protocols, and architecture).
OR
Or a combination of education and large IT enterprise experience plus 1 year as Computer Operator II in Computing & Communications enterprise operations environment.
OR
Position requires excellent written and oral communications skills and basic System Administration experience with at least one of the following operating systems Unix OS, NT and/or Unisys A-Series MCP.
