CLASS SERIES CONCEPT

Diagnose hardware equipment and software malfunctions. Maintain, repair, install, and test computers, peripherals, data communication and computer network systems.

Work solely on various computer, peripheral, network, or data communication equipment or systems.

Exercise knowledge of diagnostic programming analysis, computer architecture, file structures, application software, operating systems, and digital logic diagrams to communicate with clients, programmers, and computer operations personnel.

BASIC FUNCTION

Perform entry-level computer maintenance work troubleshooting, maintaining and repairing one or more of the following: computers, peripherals, data communication or computer network system equipment.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Under general supervision, perform routine troubleshooting, maintenance, repair, and installation activities such as replacing boards; diagnosing and correcting hardware problems; assisting senior level technicians in the routine installation of computer equipment; delivering and connecting personal computers, printers, video display terminals, etc.

TYPICAL WORK

Perform routine maintenance and repair on various computer equipment, peripherals, data communication equipment or computer networks such as: personal computers, laser printers, input/output devices; central processing units; video display terminals; disk drives; graphics terminals; smart switches, modems, etc.;

Use electronic test equipment such as multimeters, logic probes, logic analyzers, function generators, counters, controllers, and bridge capacitance meters to troubleshoot equipment malfunction(s) to system, board, or component level; use computer-aided diagnostics and/or digital logic devices as needed to locate malfunction(s);

Perform mechanical, electro-mechanical, or electronic repairs; follow vendor manuals, schematics and wiring diagrams, specifications, or specific instructions from supervisor to make repairs to system, board, or component level; calibrate and/or test for proper operation;

Perform preventive maintenance for computer, peripheral and/or data communication equipment; test and adjust to appropriate standards;

Assist senior level technicians and/or manufacturer's representatives in the installation of new equipment and/or systems such as network circuits or local area networks; prepare and maintain documentation of network changes;

Confer with faculty, students, staff, and/or supervisors in determining equipment problems or fulfilling service requirements;

Fabricate cables for use in interfacing peripherals with computers, etc.;

Update computer maintenance manuals;

May direct the work of others;

May maintain an inventory of spare parts and supplies;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - UW Contract Classified

Two years of experience/training in computer maintenance technology or related field

OR

An Associate's Degree in computer maintenance technology or related field OR equivalent education/experience.
