BASIC FUNCTION

Receive and route incoming calls on telephone switching system serving an institution and teaching hospital or medical center.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Within established guidelines, provide multiple communications services such as radio paging, two-way radio, or public address system, including on-call consultations, emergency announcements and notifications in accordance with the standard operating procedures Implement institution/hospital security and emergency procedures.

TYPICAL WORK

Receive and route incoming telephone calls to appropriate departments or personnel; place local and long distance calls; transfer calls; record and relay messages via telephone or paging facilities;

Maintain familiarity with security and emergency procedures; initiate necessary coordination and action; monitor alarm systems;

Maintain locator files; locate personnel by radio paging, two-way radio, public address, etc.;

Answer requests for information; assist callers by determining nature of business involved;

May perform clerical duties including some typing;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - UW Contract Classified

High School Diploma, or GED Certificate; AND one year of experience as a Telephone Communications Operator, or equivalent. Six months of additional qualifying experience may substitute for required education.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
