PAYROLL TECHNICIAN 1

BASIC FUNCTION

Prepare and maintain payroll records; compile payroll data from source documents; compute wages and post wage data to payroll records; compute and record total earnings and with holdings; prepare input for computer; verify, investigate and reconcile errors in computer output.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

First-level class of series. Using established procedures, perform routine fiscal work to support the preparation of the institution payroll.

TYPICAL WORK

Prepare payroll records for new employees;

Extract and input to computer salary data from source documents;

Check time cards and work records; compute earnings for the pay period;

Input to system such payroll deductions as medical and life insurance, savings plans, credit union payments and union dues; input codes to control computer calculations of withholding and retirement contributions;

Investigate payroll discrepancies, review payroll errors, make corrective entries as directed;

Assist in assembling composite reports for total amounts due to various government and private agencies; prepare reports providing data for the issuance of institutional checks in payment to those agencies; verify and distribute computer reports;

operate calculator, adding machine, accounting machine, computer terminal and typewriter;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - UW Contract Classified
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS - Classified Non-Union

High School Diploma, or GED Certificate; AND six months of relevant experience. Six months of additional qualifying experience may substitute for required education. Applicable college-level course work may substitute for required experience.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
