CLASS SERIES CONCEPT

Within the Institute for Health Metrics Evaluation (IHME), provide editorial and administrative support for the effective tracking, presentation, and communication of research.

BASIC FUNCTION

Provide coordination of the editorial process leading to publication of scientific papers by IHME staff in peer-reviewed scientific journals and provide editorial support to assigned research team.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Under general supervision, develop a command of the intellectual material and analytic concepts that are central to an assigned research team and support the development of high-quality peer-reviewed scientific papers for the assigned research team. Coordinate the publication process and many of the organizational responsibilities for IHME’s scientific papers for submission to peer-reviewed scientific publications in order to broaden the quantitative evidence base for health.

TYPICAL WORK

Manage key tasks related to scientific paper production, including: sending papers to collaborators for comment, collation and triage of collaborator comments, collection and management of author information for publications, checking journal proofs meticulously for errors, and other tasks critical for publication in scientific journals, as delegated by members of the Scientific Communications team;

Contact journals to determine journal submission requirements; ensure submitted papers meet requirements;

Track and send collaborator communications, including notifications about upcoming deadlines;

Maintain contact information for collaborators and journals in database; database management oversight, in conjunction with the Engagement team;

Assist with creating and updating production timelines; follow up with faculty and staff regarding paper timelines and tasks ensuring deadlines are met;

Develop a command of the intellectual material and analytic concepts that are central to the assigned research team which span epidemiology, biostatistics survey methodology, health economics, demography, social determinates, small area estimates and others;

Complete literature reviews and assist with referencing for paper production;

Edit manuscripts for consistency, clarity, grammar, syntax, and formatting for specific journals;

Fact-check publications against results datasets;

Extract key details and data from IHME data visualization tools;

Perform the work of an IHME Editorial Assistant, as needed;

Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, english, social sciences or related field and two years of related experience,

Equivalent combination of education/experience.
