Payroll Title Environmental Outreach Specialist
Typical Responsibilities

Communicate scientific and technical knowledge and develop science-based education and outreach products on issues related to the environment. Seek to increase the environmental literacy and understanding of program participants, stakeholders, and the public. Provide knowledge and technical assistance to stakeholders and conduct applied research on specific topical areas or emerging issues to meet identified public or constituent needs utilizing expertise gained through formal education at the Master's level or equivalent related experience in a scientific or professional discipline such as oceanography, biology, environmental sciences, resource management, environmental law, urban planning, economics, etc. Direct the activities of participants and staff involved in specific outreach or engagement activities.

Supervisory Responsibility

Positions in this series are not required to supervise staff.

Overtime Eligibility

FLSA overtime status is based on the position's duties and responsibilities, and whether or not the position's gross salary is less than the federal FLSA salary basis test or the Washington state salary basis test, whichever is higher. Professional Staff Exemption

Continuing Education: Individuals that have responsibility for administrative, operational and/or educational components of extension or continuing education activities or programs.

Sample Working Titles

Marine Water Quality Specialist; Coastal Hazards Specialist; Coastal Management Specialist; Outreach and Adaptation Specialist; Education and Outreach Director; Marine Program Manager.

Alternative Payroll Titles

If outreach/education responsibilities are not the primary focus of the position; then other payroll titles should be considered. If program management activities are the focus of the position, then payroll titles under the Program Direction/Control exemption may be more appropriate. If research activities and responsibilities are the focus of the position's responsibilities, then payroll titles under the Research exemption may be more appropriate.

Limitations

At least 50% of the position's time must be spent in outreach activities to meet the Continuing Education exemption.Payroll titles in this job family are limited for use by the College of the Environment with exceptions approved by the Compensation Office. Positions at the higher grade require a terminal degree and may include Principal Investigator status.
