BASIC FUNCTION
Conduct complex clinical diagnostic eye examinations and procedures; assist with minor surgical procedures; maintain specialized equipment; develop patient education materials.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Under general supervision, perform complex clinical diagnostic eye examinations and procedures, such as refractometry, visual acuity and Goldmann visual field and Humphrey visual field determinations; assist with minor surgical procedures such as suture adjustment, astigmatic keratometry, and wound repair; assist with the development of patient education materials and learn basic telephone triage. May float between sites.
TYPICAL WORK
Initiate and perform refractometry when indicated by vision screening;
Schedule and independently perform tests such as visual acuity, Goldmann and Humphrey visual field determinations, ultrasound A-scan tests and pachymetry; report results to physician;
Perform basic slit lamp examinations and blood sugar tests;
Under physician direction administer topical medications, such as eye drops, ointments, and irrigating solutions to the eye;
Review medical records and note need for specific testing prior to physician examination;
Assist with orientation of residents, new employees and float pool staff;
Assist with the development of patient educational materials;
Triage patient calls, address concerns, follow-up questions and/or refer patient questions as appropriate;
Perform the work of an Ophthalmic Technician 1;
Perform related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - UW Contract Classified
Completion of an approved ophthalmic technician program and one year of experience; Certified Ophthalmic Assistant

equivalent education/experience.
