CLASS SERIES CONCEPT

Determine departmental/organizational computing needs using systems analysis and design methodologies in applying analytical problem solving skills. Write programming solutions using all levels of programming languages and other supporting computer based tools such as database management systems, report generators, system utilities, and commercial application software in various computing environments and technologies. Advise departments and/or the institution(s) on long term strategic information management and planning.

This series differs from other computer related series in that the major function is in development and maintenance of business, administrative, instructional support, and/or courseware systems.

BASIC FUNCTION

Perform systems analysis/programming tasks such as writing, testing, debugging, implementing, documenting, and maintaining simple computer programs using programming languages, database systems, and software utilities. Assist in the analysis, development and review of system specifications.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Under direct supervision, write simple computer programs from existing specifications and perform modifications and updates to existing programs and/or application software.

TYPICAL WORK

Write, test, debug, document, and maintain simple computer programs using programming languages, database systems and/or software utilities;

Assist in preparing test data; test and debug computer programs;

Assist in preparation of functional process descriptions and detailed program logic flow to describe existing and proposed operations;

Assist in the documentation of programs and operational procedures;

May design screens, forms, and reports as prescribed by existing specifications;

May provide consultation, training, and assistance to computer users/clients;

May maintain independent database(s) and related operations;

May assist with installation of computing hardware and software;

May assist in the operation of computers and peripheral equipment;

Perform related duties as required.

Two years of college coursework in computer science or a related field

equivalent education/experience.
