Apply creative and original solutions to develop and design the layout of published materials, including the use of specialty graphic design software packages, desk top publishing, and related publishing tools. Develop materials that are used to maintain an organization's visual identity and/or enhance the organization's communications with various audiences.Examples of responsibilities include: - Printed material design and production, including graphics, artwork, and illustration design, - Design and lay out copy, - Graphic standards development and maintenance, - Visual identity ("brand") maintenance across print and digital communications, - Signature typeface, color palette, image, and page layout design, - Logo standards development, and - Web publication.

Positions in this series are not required to supervise staff, but occasional oversight of freelance graphics specialists may occur.

Positions in this payroll title series are FLSA overtime exempt except when the position's gross salary is less than $455 per week (FLSA salary basis test).
|Professional Staff Exemption|| |
Graphic Arts and Publications: Individuals having prescribed academic preparation or special training in the fields of graphic arts, printing and publications, and who are assigned to a major academic or administrative unit and who are responsible for the development and design of scholarly or related publications, or the full range of printing and publication activities.

If the primary focus of the position is editing and writing communication materials to inform the public, a payroll title in the Public Information Specialist series may be more appropriate. If the primary focus of the position is creating and developing website features and usability, a payroll title in the Web Graphic Specialist series may be more appropriate.
Work performed by positions in this exemption requires specialized knowledge typically acquired through formal education and training in graphic arts or related field. Typical degrees in this area are Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) or Master of Fine Arts (MFA). Other degrees that might apply would be a Bachelor's degree in Design, Graphic Arts, or Visual Communications.
