We use a rolling 12-month period to determine your FMLA balance.<\/p>\n<p>Your time off or leave of absence may be taken as a single block of time or, when medically necessary, on an intermittent basis or as a reduced work schedule.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Calculating your available leave<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Step 1<\/strong>: Determine the <strong>date you wish to start<\/strong> your leave.<\/p>\n<p><em>Example<\/em>: March 10, 2016<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 2<\/strong>:\u00a0Count back\u00a0<strong>12 months<\/strong>\u00a0from that start date.<\/p>\n<p><em>Example<\/em>: March 11, 2015<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1223 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/FMLA-calendar-Graphic-1.jpg\" alt=\"FMLA calendar Graphic 1\" width=\"900\" height=\"253\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"m-t-2\"><strong>Step 3<\/strong>: Add up the FMLA time already taken during that 12-month period.<\/p>\n<p><em>Example<\/em>: You took <strong>two weeks in April 2015<\/strong> and <strong>three more weeks in January 2016<\/strong>. Total used in the past 12 months: <strong>five weeks<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-1224 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/FMLA-calendar-Graphic-2.jpg\" alt=\"FMLA calendar Graphic 2\" width=\"900\" height=\"288\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"m-t-2\"><strong>Step 4<\/strong>: Subtract the amount of time already taken from the 12 weeks allowed. The remainder is the amount of time you can take for your current leave.<\/p>\n<p><em>Example<\/em>: 12 weeks minus 5 weeks = <strong>7 weeks available<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>Part-time employees<\/h4>\n<p>When you work a part-time schedule, your available amount of FMLA leave is determined on a pro rata or proportional basis. FMLA provides up to 12 weeks of leave. A week is determined by the number of hours you normally work.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Leave taken as full weeks:<\/strong> An staff or student employee or librarian who works 35 hours per week is entitled to 12 weeks of leave, which would total 420 hours (35 x 12), not 480 (40 x 12) hours. Faculty at 0.875 FTE are entitled to 12 weeks of leave, which would total 84 days (12 x 7 days).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Intermittent or Reduced Schedule:<\/strong> Only the amount of leave you actually take counts toward your leave entitlement. If you normally work 30 hours a week, but only are able to work 20 hours following surgery, your 10 hours of leave equal one-third of a week of FMLA leave for each week of the reduced-leave schedule.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cyclic or academic year employees<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you are in a less than 12-month service period, you are entitled to FMLA only during periods you are scheduled to work (contracted teaching periods), including summer if contracted\/scheduled to work.<\/li>\n<li>If you are in a 12-month service period, you are eligible for FMLA year-round while in active paid status.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An explanation of the amount of leave time allowed under FMLA and how it is calculated<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":49,"featured_media":0,"parent":67,"menu_order":20,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_lmt_disableupdate":"no","_lmt_disable":"no","footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-73","page","type-page","status-publish","format-standard","hentry"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.2 -
