provides leave for most academic personnel employees who are new parents, birth and non-birth parents \u2014 regardless of how long they have worked at the University.<\/p>\n<p>Contact <a the birth parent<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Following the birth of your child, you are entitled to:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Postpartum recovery<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>As prescribed by healthcare provider (generally 6 to 8 weeks).<\/li>\n<li>Depending on academic personnel category or bargaining agreement, may be eligible for paid time off.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Parental leave<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Length of leave varies by employment program.<\/li>\n<li>Depending on academic personnel category or bargaining agreement, may be eligible for paid time off.<\/li>\n<li>May request a leave of absence without pay.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Non-birth-parent-and-adoptivefoster-parents\"><\/span>Non-birth parent and adoptive\/foster parents<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The amount of leave and\/or paid time off you may take to bond with your newborn or newly placed adopted or foster child is determined by state and federal law, and applicable University policies or collective bargaining agreements.<\/p>\n<p>You may take parental leave any time during the 12 months following your child\u2019s birth, adoption, or placement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Parental leave<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Length of leave varies by academic personnel category.<\/li>\n<li>Depending on academic personnel category or bargaining agreement, may be eligible for paid time off.<\/li>\n<li>May request a leave of absence without pay.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Leave for becoming a parent is generally requested as one continuous block of time. You can adjust these dates by contacting your HR <a href=\"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/time-absence\/contact-us\/leave-specialists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leave and accommodation specialist<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Length-of-leave-and-pay-options\"><\/span>Length of leave and pay options<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<div id=\"accordion\" class=\"uwhr-accordion\">\n<div class=\"panel panel-default\">\n<div id=\"headingOne\" class=\"panel-heading\">\n<h5 class=\"panel-title\"><a class=\"panel-link collapsed\" href=\"#collapseOne\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-parent=\"#accordion\">How long can I be on leave?<i class=\"fa panel-title-icon\"><\/i><\/a><\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"collapseOne\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse\">\n<p>For temporary pregnancy and childbirth-disability leave, including pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum recovery: As prescribed by the healthcare provider (generally, 6-8 weeks). When this period ends, your parental leave begins.<\/p>\n<p>Parental leave (non-medical) may be requested as time off as allowed by the collective bargaining agreement where applicable.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"panel panel-default\">\n<div id=\"headingTwo\" class=\"panel-heading\">\n<h5 class=\"panel-title\"><a class=\"panel-link collapsed\" href=\"#collapseTwo\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-parent=\"#accordion\">How do I get paid while on leave?<i class=\"fa panel-title-icon\"><\/i><\/a><\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"collapseTwo\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse\">\n<p>You may be eligible for <a href=\"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/time-absence\/time-absence\/fmla-and-pfml\/paid-family-and-medical-leave\/\">Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML)<\/a> partial wage replacement while on authorized leave from the UW.
