{"id":40,"date":"2025-09-05T13:40:46","date_gmt":"2025-09-05T20:40:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/time-absence\/?page_id=40"},"modified":"2025-09-11T09:14:26","modified_gmt":"2025-09-11T16:14:26","slug":"leaves-for-becoming-a-parent","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/time-absence\/academic-personnel-leaves\/leaves-for-becoming-a-parent\/","title":{"rendered":"Leaves for academic personnel when becoming a parent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>This page applies to academic personnel.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The University of Washington provides leave for most academic personnel employees who are new parents, birth and non-birth parents \u2014 regardless of how long they have worked at the University.<\/p>\n<p>Contact <a href=\"mailto:hrleaves@uw.edu\">hrleaves@uw.edu<\/a> if you have any questions regarding leave for becoming a parent.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"for-the-birth-parent\">For the birth parent<\/h4>\n<p>Following the birth of your child, you are entitled to:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Postpartum recovery<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>As prescribed by healthcare provider (generally 6 to 8 weeks).<\/li>\n<li>Depending on academic personnel category or bargaining agreement, may be eligible for paid time off.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Parental leave<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Length of leave varies by employment program.<\/li>\n<li>Depending on academic personnel category or bargaining agreement, may be eligible for paid time off.<\/li>\n<li>May request a leave of absence without pay.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"uwhr-toc-top-btn\"><a href=\"#toc\">Return to top<\/a><\/p><h4 id=\"non-birth-parent-and-adoptive-foster-parents\">Non-birth parent and adoptive\/foster parents<\/h4>\n<p>The amount of leave and\/or paid time off you may take to bond with your newborn or newly placed adopted or foster child is determined by state and federal law, and applicable University policies or collective bargaining agreements.<\/p>\n<p>You may take parental leave any time during the 12 months following your child\u2019s birth, adoption, or placement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Parental leave<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Length of leave varies by academic personnel category.<\/li>\n<li>Depending on academic personnel category or bargaining agreement, may be eligible for paid time off.<\/li>\n<li>May request a leave of absence without pay.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Leave for becoming a parent is generally requested as one continuous block of time. With departmental approval, you may be able to work intermittently or request a modified work schedule.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uwhr-toc-top-btn\"><a href=\"#toc\">Return to top<\/a><\/p><h4 id=\"requesting-parental-leave\">Requesting Parental Leave<\/h4>\n<p>Complete and submit the applicable parental leave request form:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><a class=\"uwhr-form  \" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/time-absence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/07\/FMLA-campus-parental-leave-for-birth-parent-20250107-a11y.pdf\">FMLA (campus) Parental Leave for Birth Parent (PDF)<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\"><a class=\"uwhr-form  \" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/time-absence\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2016\/07\/FMLA-campus-parent-leave-for-non-birth-parent-20250107-a11y.pdf\">FMLA (campus) Parental Leave for Parent other than Birth Parent (PDF)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Request the entire period you would like to take parental leave in Workday (see <a href=\"https:\/\/employeehelp.workday.uw.edu\/user-guides\/loa_sick_injured_becoming_parent_ap\/\">Workday Leave of Absence &#8211; Sick\/Injured or Becoming a Parent User Guide<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Your leave is based on the anticipated date of birth or placement. You can adjust these dates by contacting your HR <a href=\"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/contact-us\/leave-specialists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leave and accommodation specialist<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uwhr-toc-top-btn\"><a href=\"#toc\">Return to top<\/a><\/p><h4 id=\"length-of-leave-and-pay-options\">Length of leave and pay options<\/h4>\n<p>For details about length of leave and paid leave eligibility, please refer to the applicable academic category:<\/p>\n<div id=\"leaveOptionsAccordion\" class=\"uwhr-accordion\">\n<div class=\"panel\">\n<div id=\"headingOne\" class=\"panel-heading\">\n<h5 class=\"panel-title\"><a class=\"collapsed panel-link\" href=\"#collapseOne\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-parent=\"#exemptionAccordion\">Faculty<i class=\"fa panel-title-icon\"><\/i><\/a><\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"collapseOne\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse\">\n<p><strong>How long can I be on leave?<\/strong><br \/>\nFor temporary pregnancy and childbirth-disability leave, including pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum recovery: As prescribed by the healthcare provider (generally, 6 to 8 weeks).<\/p>\n<p>Non-medical parental leave: <a href=\"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/time-absence\/academic-personnel-leaves\/time-off-and-leaves\/\">Leave without pay<\/a> may be requested for up to one academic year at a time in two consecutive academic years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do I get paid while on leave?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Medically certified leave can be approved for up to 90 days.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You may be eligible for <a href=\"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/time-absence\/fmla-and-pfml\/paid-family-and-medical-leave\/\">Paid Family and Medical Leave<\/a> of up to 12 to 18 weeks, depending on the circumstances.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"panel\">\n<div id=\"headingTwo\" class=\"panel-heading\">\n<h5 class=\"panel-title\"><a class=\"collapsed panel-link\" href=\"#collapseTwo\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-parent=\"#exemptionAccordion\">Librarians<i class=\"fa panel-title-icon\"><\/i><\/a><\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"collapseTwo\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse\">\n<p><strong>How long can I be on leave?<\/strong><br \/>\nFor temporary pregnancy and childbirth-disability leave, including pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum recovery: As prescribed by the healthcare provider (generally, 6 to 8 weeks). When this period ends, your parental leave begins.<\/p>\n<p>Parental leave (non-medical) may be requested for up to 4 months.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do I get paid while on leave?<\/strong><br \/>\nTo continue your pay during parental leave, use any of the following types of paid time off:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Vacation time off<\/li>\n<li>Personal holiday<\/li>\n<li>Holiday credit<\/li>\n<li>Compensatory time off<\/li>\n<li>Discretionary time off<\/li>\n<li>Sick time off (up to 30 days of sick time off)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You may be eligible for <a href=\"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/time-absence\/fmla-and-pfml\/paid-family-and-medical-leave\/\">Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML)<\/a> partial wage replacement while on authorized leave from the UW.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>UW employees apply for <a href=\"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/time-absence\/fmla-and-pfml\/paid-family-and-medical-leave\/\">PFML<\/a> directly from the state.<\/li>\n<li>Paid time off may be used as a supplemental benefit when receiving PFML benefits at the same time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"panel\">\n<div id=\"headingThree\" class=\"panel-heading\">\n<h5 class=\"panel-title\"><a class=\"collapsed panel-link\" href=\"#collapseThree\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-parent=\"#exemptionAccordion\">Other academic personnel<i class=\"fa panel-title-icon\"><\/i><\/a><\/h5>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"collapseThree\" class=\"panel-collapse collapse\">\n<p><strong>How long can I be on leave?<\/strong><br \/>\nFor temporary pregnancy and childbirth-disability leave, including pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum recovery: As prescribed by the healthcare provider (generally, 6-8 weeks). When this period ends, your parental leave begins.<\/p>\n<p>Parental leave (non-medical) may be requested as time off as allowed by the collective bargaining agreement where applicable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do I get paid while on leave?<\/strong><br \/>\nYou may be eligible for <a href=\"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/time-absence\/fmla-and-pfml\/paid-family-and-medical-leave\/\">Paid Family and Medical Leave (PFML)<\/a> partial wage replacement while on authorized leave from the UW.
