Academic personnel may find leave without pay information on the <span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/time-absence\/academic-personnel-leaves\/time-off-and-leaves\/\">Time off and Leaves for non-represented academic personnel webpage<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeave of absence without pay\u201d describes an unpaid\u00a0leave of absence that may be approved for the following reasons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Educational leave<\/li>\n<li>Leave for government service in public interest<\/li>\n<li>Volunteer or community servicehttps:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/time-absence\/your-time-and-absence\/manage\/<\/li>\n<li>Union project activities in accordance with a collective bargaining agreement<\/li>\n<li>Other personal, non-medical\u00a0reasons that may be approved at your department\u2019s discretion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While this webpage covers personal, non-medical leaves of absence, information on other leaves of absence may be found:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/policies\/disability-leave\/\">Disability leave<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/time-absence\/staff-leaves\/parental-leave\/\">Parental leave<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/time-absence\/staff-time-off\/time-off-for-domestic-violence-sexual-assault-or-stalking\/\">Leave related to domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/time-absence\/fmla-and-pfml\/family-and-medical-leave-act-fmla\/\">Leave designated as FMLA<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/time-absence\/staff-leaves\/military-duty-leave-and-military-family-leave\/\">Military duty leave<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Requesting leave of absence without pay<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>To request an educational, government service or a personal leave of absence without pay, submit a written request to your manager. Your request must identify the reason and duration of the requested leave.<\/p>\n<p>Requests for these leaves of absence without pay also require approval by the appropriate associate administrator, vice president, or dean and will only be approved if your manager is reasonably certain that your position will still be available when you return from leave. Approval\/disapproval determinations will be made based on coverage considerations, which may include, but are not limited to, anticipated FTE needs, use of contract labor, staff already out on leave, departmental use of overtime, and whether the employee is in good standing.<\/p>\n<p>After you have received leadership approval, employees whose leave is managed in Workday will request the appropriate type of unpaid leave of absence (LOA) in Workday. For medical center employees, <a href=\"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/contact-us\/leave-specialists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leave and accommodation specialist<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Accounting for your absence with time off<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>You must deplete your accrued time off before taking <a href=\"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/time-absence\/staff-time-off\/unpaid-time-off\/\">unpaid time off<\/a> during a leave of absence without pay.
