For the purposes of bereavement, a qualifying pregnancy is defined as the pregnancy of the employee, including a surrogate, or employee parent-to-be, including through surrogacy or adoption, where the employee would have been the parent.<\/p>\n<p>Bereavement time off is separate from your accrued sick and vacation time off. The amount of paid bereavement for regular staff depends on their employment program and is subject to bargaining. Updates to the table below will be made as bereavement time off provisions are updated or bargained.<\/p>\n<h5>Entitlement for regular staff<\/h5>\n<table id=\"tablepress-2\" class=\"tablepress staff<\/td>\n<td class=\"column-2\">\u201cFamily member\u201d is defined as a child or parent (including biological, adopted, foster, step, regardless of age or dependency, or legal guardian, or de facto parent or parent-in-law), a spouse, state registered domestic partner, spouse\u2019s parent, grandparent, grandchild, or sibling, child\u2019s spouse, or child\u2019s registered domestic partner. \u201cFamily member\u201d includes any individual who regularly resides in the employee\u2019s home or where the relationship creates an expectation that the employee care for the person, and that individual depends on the employee for care. \u201cFamily member\u201d does not include an individual who simply resides in the same home with no expectation that the employee cares for the individual.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Requesting-bereavement-time-off\"><\/span>Requesting bereavement\u00a0time off<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Bereavement time off must be taken in full-day increments.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>For campus staff:<\/strong> To request bereavement time off, follow your department\u2019s usual request procedures and select &#8220;Bereavement Time Off&#8221; in <a href=\"https:\/\/wd5.myworkday.com\/uw\/login.htmld\">Workday<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>For medical centers staff:<\/strong> To request bereavement time off, follow your department\u2019s usual request procedures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Your manager may require verification of the family member or household member&#8217;s death.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Using-other-time-offs-for-bereavement\"><\/span>Using other time offs\u00a0for bereavement<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Speak to your manager if you would like to use another type of time off for bereavement or condolence purposes. You may be able to use sick or other time off if:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your loved one is not covered by your employment program\u2019s or collective bargaining agreement\u2019s definition of family member<\/li>\n<li>Your bereavement time off entitlement does not adequately cover your bereavement obligations, such as having to travel a long distance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Bereavement-time-off-during-probationary-or-trial-service-period\"><\/span>Bereavement time off\u00a0during probationary or trial service period<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>You are eligible to take time off for bereavement during your probationary or trial service period; however, your probationary or trial service period lengthens by the number of bereavement days you take.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2025-Policy-changes-to-paid-bereavement\"><\/span>2025 Policy changes to paid bereavement<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Effective July 1, 2025, <a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/WAc\/default.aspx?cite=357-31-250\">WAC 357-31-250<\/a> allows classified non-union employees up to 5 days of paid bereavement time off for the death of a family member. A policy decision has been made to bargain changes for other staff and align the Professional Staff with these changes.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Policy-Requirements\"><\/span>Policy Requirements<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><b>Classified non-union employees:<\/b> This policy is intended to comply with <a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/wac\/default.aspx?cite=357-31-100\">WAC 357-31-100<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/wac\/default.aspx?cite=357-31-250\">WAC 357-31-250<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>Contract covered employees :<\/b>When this policy conflicts with Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBAs), Memorandums of Understandings (MOUs), the CBA or MOU will take precedence over this policy as long as it does not violate the law.
