Learn more on the <a href=\"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/time-absence\/benefits\/life-events\/self-pay-continue-your-insurance\/\">Self-pay: Continue your insurance web page<\/a> or contact <a href=\"mailto:benefits@uw.edu\">benefits@uw.edu<\/a> with questions.<\/p>\n<h5>Promotion and Tenure Clock Extensions<\/h5>\n<p>Faculty in clock-managed ranks are subject to mandatory reviews for promotion. To learn more about how leaves may affect mandatory review periods, visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/ap.washington.edu\/ahr\/working\/promotion-and-tenure-clock-changes\/\">Promotion and Tenure Clock Extension web page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Paid-sick-medical-or-family-leave\"><\/span>Paid sick, medical or family leave<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Faculty may be eligible for up to 90 calendar days of paid sick leave in accordance with <a href=\"https:\/\/policy.uw.edu\/directory\/fcg\/fcg-chapter-51-faculty-leave-and-vacations\/\">UW Faculty Code Section 51-1<\/a>. Paid sick leave covers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Your own illness or disability.<\/li>\n<li>Maternity-related disability (temporary disability due to pregnancy, childbirth, or recovery therefrom).<\/li>\n<li>Care of a family member with a serious health condition as defined by the <a href=\"https:\/\/lni.wa.gov\/workers-rights\/leave\/family-care-act\">Washington Family Care Act<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>See the <a href=\"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/time-absence\/time-absence\/academic-personnel-leaves\/faculty-paid-sick-medical-or-family-leave\/\">Faculty paid sick, medical or family leave web page<\/a> for additional guidance.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Faculty-parental-leave\"><\/span>Faculty parental leave<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Consistent with the University\u2019s commitment to support faculty in balancing their academic and family responsibilities, and <a href=\"https:\/\/policy.uw.edu\/directory\/fcg\/fcg-chapter-51-faculty-leave-and-vacations\/\">UW Faculty Code Section 51-1<\/a>, eligible faculty members may use paid sick leave in the form of Paid Parental Leave for birth and non-birth parents to bond with:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>their newborn or baby born by surrogacy,<\/li>\n<li>their newly adopted child under the age of 18, or<\/li>\n<li>a child under the age of 18 for whom legal guardianship has been newly appointed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>See <a href=\"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/time-absence\/time-absence\/faculty-leaves\/faculty-paid-parental-leave-policy\/\">Faculty Paid Parental Leave webpage<\/a> for more information.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Unpaid-leave-of-absence\"><\/span>Unpaid leave of absence<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>An unpaid leave of absence (LOA) is a temporary non-pay status and absence from duty, which is sometimes termed \u201cLWOP\u201d or \u201cunpaid leave.\u201d An unpaid LOA may be full or partial, with the individual\u2019s pay temporarily reduced commensurate with the duration and percentage of approved leave. Compensation shall align with the employee\u2019s adjusted full-time equivalent (FTE), including in cases where FTE is reduced as a disability accommodation due to an inability to perform an essential function.<\/p>\n<p>Faculty may take an unpaid LOA for a variety of reasons, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Personal reasons (e.g., family obligations or pursuing interests relevant to job duties and responsibilities)<\/li>\n<li>Parental leave, including adoption and foster placement in circumstances where FMLA is not applicable<\/li>\n<li>Family care leave in circumstances where FMLA is not applicable<\/li>\n<li>When state or federal leave entitlements are not applicable or have been exhausted and faculty member needs continued leave<\/li>\n<li>Paid sick time off allotment has been exhausted<\/li>\n<li>Medical condition does not qualify for paid sick leave use<\/li>\n<li>As a form of disability accommodation, determined and approved through the interactive process with the faculty member, Disability Services Office (DSO), and the faculty member\u2019s unit<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washington.edu\/research\/compliance\/outside-professional-work-for-compensation-form-1460\/\">Outside Professional Work<\/a>\u202fas approved by the department and the Office of Research to perform work outside University duties if engaging in professional activities for compensation. In addition to receiving an approval, employees are required to comply with <a href=\"https:\/\/policy.uw.edu\/directory\/po\/executive-orders\/eo-57-outside-professional-work-policy\/\">EO No. 57, Outside Professional Work<\/a> through the UW Office of Research.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>See <a href=\"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/time-absence\/time-absence\/academic-personnel-leaves\/leave-without-pay-policy\/\">Faculty leave without pay web page<\/a> for more information.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sabbatical\"><\/span>Sabbatical<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Faculty may be considered for sabbatical or \u201cprofessional leave\u201d consistent with EO No. 33. See the Office for Academic Personnel &amp; Faculty\u2019s web page on <a href=\"https:\/\/ap.washington.edu\/ahr\/policies\/sabbaticals\/\">Sabbatical Leave<\/a> for more information.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Vacation\"><\/span>Vacation<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Faculty with a 12-month appointment are paid in 24 installments for 11 months of service over a 12-month period from July 1 through June 30. One month is available for paid time off and can be utilized as vacation and for unplanned short-term absences. Vacation leave for 12-month faculty is not accrued and cannot be transferred to future years.
