{"id":102,"date":"2025-09-05T15:47:26","date_gmt":"2025-09-05T22:47:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/time-absence\/?page_id=102"},"modified":"2026-06-27T17:33:52","modified_gmt":"2026-06-28T00:33:52","slug":"temporary-pregnancy-and-childbirth-disability-leave","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/time-absence\/staff-leaves\/temporary-pregnancy-and-childbirth-disability-leave\/","title":{"rendered":"Temporary disability leave for pregnancy and childbirth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>This page applies to all regular professional staff, classified staff, contract covered staff, and librarians. <\/strong>Academic personnel may find information on parental leave on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/time-absence\/ops\/leaves\/becoming-a-parent-academic-personnel\/\">Becoming a parent \u2013 academic personnel webpage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Temporary disability leave for pregnancy and childbirth is available to birth parents for prenatal and postpartum medical needs. Most often, this leave is used in the six weeks immediately following childbirth (eight weeks if the birth is by caesarean section). Additional leave may be approved if you have complications and your health-care provider recommends a longer period.<\/p>\n<p>Temporary disability leave for pregnancy and childbirth is an approved leave of absence, not a type of accrued time off.<\/p>\n<p>For birth parents, temporary disability leave for pregnancy is in addition to parental leave. Following temporary disability leave for pregnancy, you may take <a href=\"http:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/ops\/leaves\/parental-leave\/\">parental leave<\/a> to bond with your new child.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Requesting leave<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Request leave by following your department\u2019s usual leave request procedure.
