As Senior Director for Environmental Health and Safety at the University of Washington and a core member of the UW COVID Incident Command team (which I also serve on), Katia has played an absolutely essential role stewarding our institution through the COVID pandemic, helping us to make critical, evidence-based decisions in a timely fashion and leading the team that has been responsible for implementing many aspects of our institutional response, including the development and implementation of cleaning, masking, work from home, and testing protocols. She has worked tirelessly with stakeholders from across our institution to make sure that decisions are well thought out and to balance health and safety needs with operational needs across the institution. As a result of Katia’s efforts, UW has remained healthy and strong and has weathered the storm of COVID better than any other academic institution that I am aware of. In surveying the attributes of a Thorud winner and the selection criteria I was struck by fact that in every possible criterion Chance has and continues to exceed expectations. I have worked closely with Chance for the past 6 years (since I was a faculty candidate here at UW) and have observed him working with countless other individuals on campus. In my nominating letter, I will draw on my own experiences and observations as well as those of a few selected faculty who have worked with Chance. Attached to this nominating letter are support letters from Profs. Martin Savage (Nuclear Theory Institute // UW Physics) and Matt O’Donnell (former dean of engineering and professor of Bioengineering) and Kelli Trosvig (Vice President for UW IT). I hope to paint a picture that Chance is exactly the type of person who is most deserving of the Thorud Leadership Award and someone for whom it is in UW’s utmost interest to recognize, reward and retain.

 See Chance’s nomination
" data-img="https://hr.uw.edu/thorud/wp-content/plugins/uw-directory/assets/dubs.png">
View Profile

Margaret Shepherd

Chief of Staff & Chief Administrative Officer (Staff) Executive office of the President and Provost

View Profile

Susan Terry

UW Career Center

Angad Singh

Associate Chief Medical Information Officer, UW Medicine

Margaret Spearmon

Chief Officer of Community Engagement and Diversity, Senior Lecturer, School of Social Work

Julie Stein

Executive Director, Professor Burke Museum, Anthropology, College of Arts & Sciences

<tr class="open-profile-modal" role="button" tabindex="0" aria-label="View Susan Terry’s profile" data-name="Susan Terry" data-title="UW Career Center" data-email="" data-department="" data-bio="
Awarded: 2013

Nominated by: Glenna Chang, Special Assistant to the Vice President for Student Life, Student Life

We have been waiting with bated breath for the call of nominations to come around again so we could finally send in our nomination for our beloved Susan Terry.
