Use these tips and guidelines when using a candidate evaluation form as a tool and resource for best practices, not a requirement. Candidate evaluation form template examples are provided for your convenience; please feel free to adapt based on the unique interests and dynamics of your team and search.<\/p>\n<h4>Tips and guidelines<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Criteria should be based on the\u00a0<a class=\"uwhr-form  \" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/talent\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/17\/2024\/05\/candidate-decision-matrix-example-20260105.docx\">Candidate Decision Matrix Example (MS Word)<\/a>, developed by hiring team and search committee.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Questions Matter:<\/strong>\u00a0Interview (phone and in-person) questions should directly correlate to specific criteria and competencies being rated on the form.<\/li>\n<li><strong>All members on search committee<\/strong>\u00a0should help\u00a0<strong>define and confirm expectations<\/strong>\u00a0and components of a \u201cquality answer\u201d prior to starting the candidate evaluation process.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hold each member accountable<\/strong>\u00a0to be consistent in rating. Discuss with the committee what defines each rating, e.g., what is the difference between a 2 and 3.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Discuss<\/strong>\u00a0multiple ways candidates can meet or demonstrate the criteria prior to screening, but be consistent and equitable.<\/li>\n<li>Include brief descriptors or indicators for each criteria being evaluated (can pull directly from candidate evaluation form).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Check-In.<\/strong>\u00a0Briefly review criteria and expectations prior to all interviews to ensure consistency.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Identify top competencies<\/strong>\u00a0and high priority requirements (not all criteria will be weighted the same).<\/li>\n<li>Prior to rating,\u00a0<strong>create three groups<\/strong>\u00a0in which to rank candidates. Consider using minimally qualified, qualified, or highly qualified.<\/li>\n<li>Consider using a<strong> group range vs. individual ranking system<\/strong> when grouping candidates, e.g., all candidates with scores totaling 15 to 20 will be considered top-tier or highly qualified.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t hold candidates to individual \u201cscores.\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0Use ratings to help assess each candidate\u2019s qualification to the criteria and scores to help group candidates into minimally qualified, qualified, or highly qualified.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Assume you may have bias, and check for bias.<\/strong>\u00a0Ask yourself and the selection committee:\n<ul>\n<li>In what ways may we have already excluded or endorsed this candidate? Why?<\/li>\n<li>Is it possible that our assumptions or biases could be affecting our rating?<\/li>\n<li>Do we have the information we need to make this conclusion?<\/li>\n<li>Are there attributes about this person that may positively or negatively influence my overall impression?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Allow time to discuss rating and\u00a0<strong>debrief immediately<\/strong>\u00a0following the interview. Discuss any differences in ratings and be sure to consider all perspectives.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Discuss strengths first.<\/strong>\u00a0Discuss strengths and any potential skills gaps and challenges for each candidate. Reference the predetermined criteria when discussing ratings and candidates.<\/li>\n<li>Ratings should be used for\u00a0<strong>consistency and documentation<\/strong>\u00a0purposes only. Candidates should be selected based on a totality of factors, not solely the total score.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Select<\/strong> the candidate that is most qualified for the role.
