{"id":29,"date":"2017-11-20T14:51:57","date_gmt":"2017-11-20T22:51:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/talent\/?page_id=29"},"modified":"2026-06-03T13:48:27","modified_gmt":"2026-06-03T21:48:27","slug":"employment-of-minors","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/talent\/hiring-process\/hiring-and-recruiting-policies\/employment-of-minors\/","title":{"rendered":"Employment of minors"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4 id=\"overview\">Overview<\/h4>\n<p>Employees who are between 14 and 17 years of age are classified as minors and their employment is regulated by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/general\/topic\/youthlabor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">U.S. Department of Labor (DOL)<\/a>. These regulations set specific requirements and restrictions related to work hours and the types of duties minors may perform.\u00a0Hiring managers are responsible for understanding and following these regulations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uwhr-toc-top-btn\"><a href=\"#toc\">Return to top<\/a><\/p><h4 id=\"hours-of-work\">Hours of work<\/h4>\n<p>Minors are allowed to work limited hours compared to adults. In general, the hours they can work vary depending on the minor&#8217;s age and whether school is in session.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>16- or 17-year-olds can be employed in any occupation (other than those declared hazardous by the Secretary of Labor), and there are no work hours limits or restrictions.<\/li>\n<li>14- and 15-year-olds can only work outside of school hours, and federal youth employment requirements limit the times of day and the number of hours they can work as well.<\/li>\n<li>Employment of minors under the age of 14 is limited to occupations that are exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act (e.g., acting).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Please refer to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/agencies\/whd\/child-labor\">U.S. Department of Labor<\/a> for specific minor work hours limits and safety restrictions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uwhr-toc-top-btn\"><a href=\"#toc\">Return to top<\/a><\/p><h4 id=\"uw-student-employees\">UW Student Employees<\/h4>\n<p>All UW student employees who are minors must adhere to federal youth employment requirements as well as the UW policy that limits their work to 19.5 hours maximum per week when the University is in session.<\/p>\n<p>Student employees who work more than 40 hours in a FLSA workweek (Monday to Sunday), will earn <a href=\"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/comp\/overtime-for-staff\/overtime-compensation\/\">overtime.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"uwhr-toc-top-btn\"><a href=\"#toc\">Return to top<\/a><\/p><h4 id=\"employers-work-permit\">Employer&#8217;s work permit<\/h4>\n<p>As a public employer, the University is exempt from Washington child labor laws and is not required to maintain a minor work permit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uwhr-toc-top-btn\"><a href=\"#toc\">Return to top<\/a><\/p><h4 id=\"resources\">Resources<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/WAC\/default.aspx?cite=296-125-015\">Chapter 296-125-015 WAC<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dol.gov\/agencies\/whd\/youthrules\">U.S. Department of Labor<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/comp\/student-employees\/\">Student hourly employee compensation and work hours limits<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/comp\/overtime-for-staff\/overtime-compensation\/\">Overtime compensation<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"uwhr-toc-top-btn\"><a href=\"#toc\">Return to top<\/a><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are special considerations for hiring minors, children between 14 and 17 years of age.
