Recaps are published online on the <a href=\"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/labor\/academic-and-student-unions\/aft\/negotiation-updates\">UW Labor Relations website.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Union Initial Proposals<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h5><strong>Article 2: Definitions<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>The Union proposed defining full-time loads, or 100 percent FTE, as 100 contact hours per quarter in any IELP program instead of the existing 150 contact hours. The Union intends for this adjustment to be made throughout the entire agreement.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Employer Initial Proposals<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h5><strong>Article 24: Duration<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>The Employer proposed a three (3) year placeholder for the duration of this agreement.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Article 21: <\/strong><strong>Compensation<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h5><strong>21.1 Salary<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>The Union proposed new language which would require that employees be provided with their estimated monthly salary at the time an employment offer is made.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>21.2 Additional Compensation<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>The Union\u2019s initial proposal included striking current contract language, and substituting it with new language that would require additional hourly work to be paid at increased amounts in the following ways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Substitute Teaching:<\/strong> instead of $70 per hour, the employee would be paid at their individual rate.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Test Proctoring:<\/strong> up from $35 to $43.75 per hour<\/li>\n<li><strong>Test Rating:<\/strong> up from $75 to $112.50 per hour\n<ul>\n<li>ITA appeals sessions, paid in increments of 3:\n<ul>\n<li>Instead of $75, the employee would be paid $112.50 for 1-3 appeals,<\/li>\n<li>Instead of $150, the employee would be paid $225 for 4-5 appeals,<\/li>\n<li>Instead of $225, the employee would be paid $337.50 for 7-9 appeals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>ENGL 105 Final Exam Rating: Instead of $150, the employee would be paid $225 per class.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lecture or Presentation on an IELP course:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>A lecture or presentation prepared in advance for one class period (or hour): Up from $140 to $175<\/li>\n<li>A videotaped exam lecture prepared in advance up: from $140 to $175<\/li>\n<li>A lecture or presentation prepared in advance for half a class period (or 30 minutes): from $70 to $87.50.<\/li>\n<li>A non-prepared Q&amp;A session for one class period (or hour): from $70 to $87.50.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>A lecture or presentation prepared in advance and including Q&amp;A given in I-TEFL or any other English Language Teacher training program:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Up from $195 to $243.75 for 60 minutes<\/li>\n<li>Up from $260 to $325 for 90 minutes<\/li>\n<li>Up from $390 to $487.50 for 120 minutes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Non-curricular projects:<\/strong> up from $35 to $43.75 per hour<\/li>\n<li><strong>ENGL 105:<\/strong> up from $75 to $93.75<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Union\u2019s Extension Lecturers would be compensated as a part of their FTE for the completion of University of Washington employment trainings, employees without a regular quarterly or hourly assignment would be compensated at $93.75 per hour for completing the employment trainings. Lastly, the Union proposed increasing Lead Teacher pay to $1,687.50 per quarter, up from $1,350 per quarter.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>21.5 Initial Base Salary Determination Upon Hire<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>The Union proposed raising the minimum base salary for Extension Lecturers as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>$5,197.50 per month, up from $4,158 for those with 1-10 years of experience.<\/li>\n<li>$5,342.50 per month, up from $4,274 for those with 10-15 years of experience.<\/li>\n<li>$5,631.25 per month, up from $4,505 for those with 15+ years of experience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Union Counter Proposals<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h5><strong>Article 7: Grievance &amp; Arbitration Procedures<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>In response to the Employer\u2019s proposal, the Union proposed current contract language for section 7.3.3. In Response to the Employer\u2019s proposal for section 7.41 the Union proposed an Extension Lecturer can have discussions about resolution of an issue so long as it is not inconsistent with the terms of the agreement and the Union gets notified. In response to the Employer\u2019s proposal the Union proposed The Union proposed extending the number of business days for a grievance timeline extension from one (1) to three (3) business days. For section 7.4.4 in response to the Employer\u2019s proposal, the Union proposed current contract language. Finally, for section 7.5.1 in response to the Employer&#8217;s proposal, the Union proposed current contract language.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Article 16: Job Descriptions-Workload<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>The Union rejected Employer proposed language to increase the class size from eighteen (18) to twenty (20) students. The Union proposed that any overload assignments would be mutually agreed upon by the Supervising Director and affected employees, as long as the Union receives notification.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Employer Counter Proposals<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h5><strong>Article 7: Grievance &amp; Arbitration Procedures<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>In response to the Union, the Employer proposed that in the event of an informal discussion with a represented employee, the Employer would notify the Union and provide the Union with the opportunity to attend their meeting. The Employer proposed including references to \u201cPERC\u201d throughout this article.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4><strong>Tentative Agreements<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h5><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Article 22:<\/strong> <strong>Complete Agreement and Conformity to Law<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>The parties agreed to keep current contract language.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Next Steps<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The next UW &amp; AFT bargaining session is scheduled for Thursday, March 19, 2026, and will be held in person.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Background This recap details the fifth in person bargaining session for the negotiation for the collective bargaining agreement between AFT and UW.
