With roughly 60,000 students, staff, and faculty making the trip to the UW every day, and with parking being limited and expensive, we strongly encourage you to make use of alternative modes of transportation.<\/p>\n<h5>TEMP Pass<\/h5>\n<p>Once placed on a temporary assignment, you may be eligible to purchase a quarterly <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washington.edu\/facilities\/transportation\/employee-u-pass#8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UW TEMP Pass<\/a>, if you are regularly scheduled at least three days a week throughout the quarter. The TEMP Pass allows for unlimited use of public transportation for a quarterly fee. Contact Transportation Services for more information.<\/p>\n<h5>Occasional drivers<\/h5>\n<p>Need your car once or twice a week for after work meetings or picking up the kids? Purchase <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washington.edu\/facilities\/transportation\/park-employee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Individual Commuter Tickets<\/a> (discounted price with your TEMP Pass).<\/p>\n<h5>Parking services<\/h5>\n<p>If you can&#8217;t take advantage of the TEMP Pass or are unable to get here without driving alone, parking permits may be purchased at Transportation Services. Current information about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washington.edu\/facilities\/transportation\/park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">parking fees<\/a> and procedures are available online, including information about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washington.edu\/facilities\/transportation\/carpool-vanpool\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">carpooling and vanpooling<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h5>Car sharing<\/h5>\n<p>There are private membership-based car sharing programs in the area that provide you access to a new-model vehicle for personal and business use. Leave your car at home and use options such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zipcar.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zipcar<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zimride.com\/uwseattle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zimride<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.car2go.com\/en\/seattle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Car2Go<\/a> on days you have meetings or errands.<\/p>\n<h5>Biking\/Walking<\/h5>\n<p>For many commuters, biking is the quickest and easiest way to get to the UW. We have excellent bicycle facilities and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washington.edu\/facilities\/transportation\/bike-intro\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">biking web page<\/a> has information about racks, lockers and showers. With a Temp PASS you can extend your trip by taking your bike on the bus.<\/p>\n<p>Live close enough to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washington.edu\/facilities\/transportation\/walk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">walk<\/a> to campus? Try out a healthy commute. Sometimes a little guidance or information can help to quickly resolve an otherwise difficult problem.<\/p>\n<p>The University offers resources for getting help in resolving problems that may be affecting an employee&#8217;s work life.<\/p>\n<h5>Professional and Organizational Development<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/pod\/\">Professional and Organizational Development (POD)<\/a> offers\u00a0cost-effective, timely, and high-quality classroom training, webinars, coaching, career counseling, and consulting services, for a fee.<\/p>\n<h5>WorkLife<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/worklife\/\">WorkLife<\/a> supports University faculty, staff, and students in meeting their work and family needs through consultation and referral to campus and community resources. WorkLife can help with information on child care, elder\/adult care, flexible work options and other issues that impact individuals at any stage of their life cycle.<\/p>\n<h5>WA Employee Assistance Program<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/worklife\/employee-assistance-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Washington State Employee Assistance Program<\/a> (WA EAP) offers confidential, in-person assessment and short-term counseling by local professionals for any issue that may cause concern for an employee or employee\u2019s family member. Examples include stress, work-related problems, family and parenting concerns, relationship issues, drug\/alcohol problems, financial questions, and grief and depression. The initial consultation is free, as well as limited session(s) with a license therapist, attorney, or financial planning specialist.<\/p>\n<h5>UW Women&#8217;s Center<\/h5>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/womenctr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Washington Women&#8217;s Center<\/a> is a vital place where women and men partner to build a culture of social justice, equity, and non-violence, domestically and globally. The Women\u2019s Center has a list of a <a href=\"http:\/\/depts.washington.edu\/womenctr\/resources\/on-campus-resources\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wide variety of resources<\/a> available on campus for staff, faculty, and students.<\/p>\n<h5>Disability Services Office<\/h5>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washington.edu\/admin\/dso\/\">Disability Services Office (DSO)<\/a> serves UW community members with disabilities. The DSO can assist with UW employees seeking accommodations to help them get their jobs done. Employees can also contact UTemp Staffing or their supervisor to discuss their accommodation needs.<\/p>\n<p>Examples of typical accommodations from the Disability Services Office include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sign language interpreters<\/li>\n<li>Real time captioning<\/li>\n<li>Disability parking or shuttle service<\/li>\n<li>Accessible furniture<\/li>\n<li>Alternative print format (audio taping, enlarged print, Braille)<\/li>\n<li>Assistive listening devices<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Persons needing such accommodation should notify the DSO at least ten days prior to the event, at 206-543-6450 voice, 206-543-6452 TTY, or <a href=\"mailto:dso@uw.edu\">dso@uw.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h5>Ombud<\/h5>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washington.edu\/ombud\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ombud<\/a> acts as a source of information and assistance to all members of the University community concerning University-related academic and non-academic rules, regulations, and procedures. The Ombud is an independent and impartial resource to help employees assess which options may be right for them when addressing concerns, or to discuss strategies for engaging in informal problem-solving.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uwhr-toc-top-btn\"><a href=\"#toc\">Return to top<\/a><\/p><h4 id=\"personal-safety-and-violence-prevention\">Personal safety and\u00a0violence prevention<\/h4>\n<p>The University values safety and security for all members of the University community. All employees should be familiar with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washington.edu\/safecampus\/\">SafeCampus<\/a>, the University&#8217;s violence prevention and response program. The program is based on the principle that early reporting of, and response to, potentially violent situations is better than responding to a violent incident after it takes place. The steps for reporting a situation follow:<\/p>\n<h5>Urgent and imminent threats<\/h5>\n<p><strong>Step 1:<\/strong> Call <strong>911<\/strong> from any Seattle campus phone. You will be immediately connected with the <a href=\"http:\/\/police.uw.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Washington Police Department (UWPD)<\/a> which serves the University community 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. (Note: If you dial 911 from your cell phone while on the Seattle campus you will access the Seattle Police Department. If you reach them, ask to be connected to the UW Police.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 2:<\/strong> Once safe, call the Violence Prevention and Response Team at <strong>206-685-SAFE (206-685-7233)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Step 3:<\/strong> Report the situation to your supervisor or the head of your unit.<\/p>\n<p>For non-emergency calls to UWPD call: 685-UWPD (206-685-8973)<\/p>\n<h5>Potential or suspected threats<\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Call <strong>206-685-SAFE (206-685-7233)<\/strong> to report the situation to the Violence Prevention and Response Team.<\/li>\n<li>Report the situation to your supervisor or the head of your unit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Every academic quarter, the SafeCampus provides a free 50 minute <a href=\"https:\/\/catalyst.uw.edu\/webq\/survey\/kianams\/296515\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Violence Prevention and Response Training<\/em><\/a> workshop to UW employees and students, in addition to the many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washington.edu\/safecampus\/about\/netid\/training.html\">training resources<\/a> available online.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Learn more<\/strong> about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washington.edu\/safecampus\/about\/\">SafeCampus<\/a>, the University&#8217;s violence prevention and response program.<\/p>\n<h5>UW Alert<\/h5>\n<p>UW Alert is a voluntary self-subscription service that disseminates official information during emergencies or crisis situations that may disrupt the normal operation of the UW or threaten the health or safety of members of the UW community.<\/p>\n<p>UW Alert delivers messages to subscribers on a &#8220;best effort&#8221; basis to email and\/or to Short Message Service (SMS) text-capable wireless devices, such as many cellular telephones. Effective emergency response requires personal preparedness and planning. While no emergency communication system is guaranteed to be effective and reliable in every situation, we encourage you to sign up for UW Alert as one part of your emergency preparedness plan. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washington.edu\/safety\/alert\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sign up for UW Alert<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h5>Husky NightWalk 685-WALK (9255)<\/h5>\n<p>Uniformed security guards will walk with students, staff, and faculty members to various locations on campus, and within a one-mile radius off campus 7 days a week from 7:00 p.m.\u20133:00 a.m. (6:00 p.m.\u20132:00 a.m. with the start of fall quarter and earlier hours of darkness). The guards can also provide other services. <a href=\"http:\/\/police.uw.edu\/aboutus\/divisions\/security\/husky-nightwalk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Learn more<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h5>Night Ride<\/h5>\n<p>If you live within a mile of campus to the west, north or east, and stay on campus after dark, you can use your TEMP Pass to take the Night Ride for free. The Night Ride shuttle takes you from campus right to your front door. See the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washington.edu\/facilities\/transportation\/uwshuttles\/nr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Night Ride web page<\/a> for complete information.<\/p>\n<h5>Campus emergency phones<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.washington.edu\/safety\/emergency-phones\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Emergency phones<\/a> are located throughout the Seattle campus. Outdoor emergency phones are mounted on blue poles with blue lights on top. The UW Police will be able to locate you within one to two minutes on campus when you use a campus emergency phone.<\/p>\n<h5>Protect your personal property<\/h5>\n<p>The campus is an open community and unsecured property is at risk of theft.<\/p>\n<p>Never leave your personal property unattended or out in the open.<\/p>\n<p>Lock your personal property in a file cabinet or a safe location while you are at work.<\/p>\n<h6>Protect your car<\/h6>\n<ul>\n<li>Don&#8217;t leave anything of value in your car.<\/li>\n<li>Record serial numbers of after-market items such as CD players and cell phones.<\/li>\n<li>Use a locking device such as &#8220;The Club.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Report suspicious activity in parking lots or garages.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h6>Protect your bike and electronic equipment<\/h6>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/police.uw.edu\/loveyourstuff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Register your bicycle and electronics online<\/a> with UWPD! Each year, hundreds of bicycles are stolen from the University campus. Many are retrieved but cannot be returned to the owners because they are not registered or the owner has no proof of ownership.
