BASIC FUNCTION

Under general supervision, perform semi-technical duties as a lead in a centralized Clinical Medical Laboratory.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Regularly assign, instruct and check the work of others.

Positions in this class are distinguished by performance of duties of more difficulty or responsibility than Specimen Processing Technician but differ from Laboratory Technician as duties pertain to specimen and data management rather than specimen analysis. Positions in this class function as assistants to the Specimen Processing Supervisor and will directly lead Specimen Processing Technicians and/or other staff.

TYPICAL WORK

Perform semi-technical duties as a lead assistant in a centralized service laboratory for a scientific department such as blood drawing activities, specimen handling, or data management, etc.;

Order replacement supplies according to established procedures; assist with inventory or departmental supplies and equipment;

Advise physicians, nurses, ward clerks, and technologists on procedures pertaining to laboratory and computer functions;

Troubleshoot problems with data or specimens arising in the analytic laboratories or in the computer;

Perform the work of Specimen Processing Technician;

Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Two years of college-level science in an applicable field AND six months of experience as a Specimen Processing Technician

OR

High School graduation or GED Certification AND 18 months of clinical laboratory experience in a Clinical or Public Health Laboratory

OR

equivalent education/experience.
