The work or tasks performed by the service animal must be directly related to the individual\u2019s disability. The crime deterrent effects of an animal\u2019s presence and the provision of emotional support, well-being, comfort, or companionship do not constitute work or tasks.<\/p>\n<p>Examples of work or tasks include, but are not limited to, assisting individuals who are blind or have low vision with navigation or other tasks, alerting individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing to the presence of people or sounds, pulling a wheelchair, providing physical support and assistance with balance and stability to individuals with mobility disabilities, and helping persons with psychiatric and neurological disabilities by preventing or interrupting impulsive or destructive behavior.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align:right;\"><a href=\"#top\">Return to top<\/a><\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Service-animal-owners-responsibilities\"><\/span>Service animal owner\u2019s responsibilities<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The service animal\u2019s owner is responsible for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Keeping the animal under direct control<\/li>\n<li>Ensuring that the animal is not disruptive<\/li>\n<li>Cleaning up after the animal immediately and disposing of waste and debris promptly<\/li>\n<li>Dealing with any damage or injury caused by the service animal<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Read the\u00a0UW\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/policy.uw.edu\/uw-policy-directory\/aps\/section-40-personnel\/aps-46-6-service-animals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Service Animal Policy <\/a>(UW APS 46.6) for additional responsibilities while on University premises.<\/p>\n<p>Employees needing a workplace accommodation, should visit the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/hr.uw.edu\/dso\/services\/services-for-faculty-and-staff\/\">disability\u00a0accommodation for employees<\/a>\u00a0webpage.<\/p>\n<p>Members of the public with service animals do not need to provide documentation or request an accommodation.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align:right;\"><a href=\"#top\">Return to top<\/a><\/div>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"SupervisorBuilding-Coordinator-responsibilities\"><\/span>Supervisor\/Building Coordinator responsibilities<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>You must permit service animal access with its owner when it is readily apparent that the animal is trained to perform tasks for the individual. If the need is not apparent, you may ask only the following two questions of the individual:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Is the service animal required because of a disability?<\/li>\n<li>What tasks has the animal been trained to perform?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You may <strong>not<\/strong> ask for any of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Information on the nature of the individual\u2019s\u00a0disability<\/li>\n<li>Medical information<\/li>\n<li>Documentation or proof that the animal is a service animal<\/li>\n<li>Demonstration of the animal\u2019s ability to perform tasks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you have any doubt that the animal is required because of a disability, admit the animal into the\u00a0UW facility, and then contact the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washington.edu\/ada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ADA coordinator<\/a>.
