BASIC FUNCTION<\/strong><\/p>\n

At the University of Washington Medical Center-Montlake (UWMC-Montlake), this class serves as a specialist in nutritional assessment and provides medical nutritional therapy to patients.<\/p>\n

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Under general direction, serves as a specialist in nutritional assessment, management and education of patients in specialty areas such as Oncology, Transplant, Bariatrics, Diabetes, ICU\/Critical Care or Neonatal ICU.<\/p>\n

TYPICAL WORK<\/strong><\/p>\n

Perform dietitian duties in a specialty area such as; Oncology, Transplant, Bariatrics, Diabetes, ICU\/Critical Care, or Neonatal ICU;<\/p>\n

Assess special nutritional needs of patients, including those with high risk nutritional issues;<\/p>\n

Assess, evaluate, and prescribe modified\/therapeutic diets;<\/p>\n

Recommend to medical staff medication use or dosage to optimize nutritional therapy and address food and drug interaction for designated medications;<\/p>\n

Serve as a consultant on nutrition care as a member of a health care team; Act as liaison between clinical dietitians and other clinical professional staff;<\/p>\n

Develop, organize, implement and evaluate nutrition education for patients; arrange discharge nutrition care plans with outside agencies;<\/p>\n

Adhere to all state, federal, local and JCAH standards for dietary departments; advise on requirements as appropriate;<\/p>\n

Conduct research projects within the area of specialty;<\/p>\n

Provide input in development of budgetary data, such as FTE requirements, equipment needs, revenue forecasting;<\/p>\n

Participate in the development of electronic medical records and utilize database systems and train other staff in their use to evaluate nutrition care;<\/p>\n

Coordinate outreach programs, train community dietitians in current research and its application to nutrition and food service systems in sub-specialty areas;<\/p>\n

Educate staff and providers, develop and present in-service programs to students and staff in specialty area;<\/p>\n

May provide day-to-day work direction to Dietetic Technician(s) or other assigned staff;<\/p>\n

May participate in selection of applicants, training and onboarding\/orientation of new employees;<\/p>\n

May assist in developing education objectives and implementing programs of study for dietetic and post-masters students; and<\/p>\n

Perform other duties as assigned.<\/p>\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n

A Bachelor’s degree involving major study in food and nutrition or dietetics<\/p>\n

AND<\/p>\n

Registration as a Dietitian by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics within three (3) months of hire<\/p>\n

AND<\/p>\n

Washington State Dietitian Certification within six (6) months of hire.<\/p>\n

Equivalent education and\/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and\/or registration.<\/p>\n
