BASIC FUNCTION<\/strong><\/p>\n

Perform skilled work in the maintenance of institution grounds, landscapes, athletic fields and\/or nursery or greenhouse.<\/p>\n

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Under general supervision, perform skilled tasks requiring knowledge of cultivation, and maintenance of trees, lawns, and ornamental plants, such as soil testing, pruning, transplanting plant material, and applying chemicals.<\/p>\n

TYPICAL WORK<\/strong><\/p>\n

Prepare soil for planting; plant seed, sod, turf, bulbs, plants, trees, and shrubs;<\/p>\n

Clean, service and maintain tools and equipment, including power equipment;<\/p>\n

Seed, mow, irrigate, sweep, fertilize, top dress, edge, aerate and maintain lawns;<\/p>\n

Install, repair and operate lawn sprinkler systems;<\/p>\n

Transplant seedlings, trees and shrubs and other nursery stock;<\/p>\n

Rake and remove leaves; pull, hoe, and control weeds;<\/p>\n

Prune, spray and fertilize trees, shrubs and ground covers;<\/p>\n

Remove debris, leaves, brush, snow, and ice from areas such as walks, stairs, roads, ramps and parking facilities; apply ice melter, sand and gravel;<\/p>\n

Install and maintain campus signs, fences, rockeries, etc.;<\/p>\n

Read and interpret blueprints for projects;<\/p>\n

Use a variety of manual tools and equipment, such as rakes, pruning shears, hand edgers, loppers, shovels, wheelbarrows and pesticide sprayers;<\/p>\n

Operate power and motorized equipment such as weed trimmers, chain saws, backpack blowers, rototillers, light tractors, front-end loaders, small trucks, lawn mowers, sweepers, aerators, sod cutters and snow blowers;<\/p>\n

Direct the work of others;<\/p>\n

Apply pesticides and herbicides to greenery and plant material;<\/p>\n

May mow, maintain and stripe athletic fields;<\/p>\n

Perform duties of Gardener I;<\/p>\n

Perform related duties as required.<\/p>\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Physical ability to do required work AND one year of experience or training involving grounds maintenance, plant care, cultivation and landscape installation.<\/p>\n

Equivalent education and\/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and\/or registration.<\/p>\n
