Perform animal care duties; provide care for animals and animal facilities.<\/p>\n

BASIC FUNCTION<\/strong><\/p>\n

Perform specialized skilled animal husbandry functions.<\/p>\n

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Independently perform duties and administrative tasks requiring specialized knowledge of technical aspects of animal care.<\/p>\n

TYPICAL WORK<\/strong><\/p>\n

Perform duties of Animal Technician 2;<\/p>\n

Perform tasks in support of specialized programs, projects, or administrative duties requiring an advanced level of technical and\/or mechanical skill and knowledge, as well as significant independence and autonomy. Areas may include BSL3 facility, gnotobiotic core, weekend lead, clinical care, and enrichment coordination.<\/p>\n

May assign, review and approve the work of other Animal Technicians, and train Animal Technicians;<\/p>\n

Assist in ensuring that proper animal husbandry procedures are followed by all husbandry staff, in accordance with applicable regulations and standard operating procedures;<\/p>\n

Identify specialized animal care requirements for research projects;<\/p>\n

Provide basic medical treatments under the direction of veterinary staff;<\/p>\n

May administer injectable medications, collect swabs and blood samples for laboratory analysis and\/or monitor general post-operative condition;<\/p>\n

May perform research experiment activities under appropriate direction;<\/p>\n

May have work assignments at more than one Animal Facility;<\/p>\n

Perform related duties as required.<\/p>\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n

American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT), Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) certification, OR Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) certification.<\/p>\n

AND<\/p>\n

Two years of experience as an Animal Technician 2 or equivalent;<\/p>\n

OR<\/p>\n

one year of experience as an Animal Technician 2 or equivalent and one year of college with major study in animal or life science.<\/p>\n

Equivalent education and\/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and\/or registration.<\/p>\n
