Provide technical support to health care professionals, clinicians, and technologists involved in patient care. Repair malfunctioning patient care life support equipment during emergent situations.<\/p>\n<p>This series is distinguished from the Media Maintenance, Computer Maintenance, and Electronic Technician series by working in a health care facility on patient care, life support, and clinical laboratory equipment and apparatus for use in patient diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, and life support.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BASIC FUNCTION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Perform entry-level biomedical electronics work in troubleshooting, repairing, maintaining, installing, testing and calibrating all biomedical electronic\/mechanical\/hydraulic instruments, apparatus, equipment, and systems used in a health care facility.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Under direct supervision, receive on-the-job training and perform routine troubleshooting, maintenance, repair, installation, assembly, and testing activities such as but not limited to conducting electrical safety inspections; test and calibrate patient scales, microscopes, baby warmers, etc.; perform preventive maintenance; repair and fabricate patient cables, simple electronic circuits and assemblies related to patient care.<\/p>\n<p><strong>TYPICAL WORK<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Maintain, troubleshoot, repair, calibrate and test mechanical, electro-mechanical, electronic equipment or apparatus such as patient scales, microscopes, hypothermia units, blood warmers, bone drills, cast cutters, infusion devices, electronic thermometers used in patient care;<\/p>\n<p>Use electronic test equipment such as digital multi-meters, calibrators, safety analyzers, and defibrillator testers to troubleshoot equipment malfunctions to system, board, or component level;<\/p>\n<p>Perform mechanical or electro-mechanical repair(s); perform electronic repairs to system, board, or component level; calibrate and\/or test for proper operation;<\/p>\n<p>Perform preventive maintenance and\/or electrical safety inspections on basic patient care and clinical laboratory equipment; test, adjust, and calibrate to federal, state, and local electrical and fire safety standards;<\/p>\n<p>Assist senior level technicians in the installation of patient care or clinical laboratory equipment for use in health care facilities;<\/p>\n<p>Use proper biohazard (e.g. AIDS and hepatitis) and radiation (e.g. X-ray and isotope) practices while performing duties including special hospital procedures in operating rooms, delivery rooms, immunosuppressed patients, etc.;<\/p>\n<p>Confer with faculty, staff, clients, vendors, students, and\/or supervisors in determining equipment problems or fulfilling service requests;<\/p>\n<p>Evaluate medical equipment and prepare reports and documentation for unusual incident equipment malfunctions;<\/p>\n<p>Order, stock, and store patient care and\/or clinical laboratory equipment parts;<\/p>\n<p>May repair malfunctioning patient care life support equipment during emergent situations;<\/p>\n<p>May perform limited maintenance or repair on computers;<\/p>\n<p>May create and maintain database files for equipment inventory;<\/p>\n<p>May develop methods and procedures for proper operation of electronic equipment; and<\/p>\n<p>Perform other duties as required.<\/p>\n<p><strong>LEGAL REQUIREMENTS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There may be instances where individual positions must have additional licenses or certification. It is the employer\u2019s responsibility to ensure the appropriate licenses\/certifications are obtained for each position.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An Associate&#8217;s Degree in Electronics, Biomedical Equipment Technology or related field.<\/p>\n<p>Equivalent education and\/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and\/or registration.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CLASSIFICATION HISTORY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>10\/01\/2024: Class adopted for UW contract classified staff per PERC decision to add this title to the WFSE Campuswide bargaining unit (Case #138986-E-24).
