CLASS SERIES CONCEPT<\/strong><\/p>\n

Performs duties in support of the operation of a clinical laboratory, such as conducting laboratory testing and preparation or set up of testing specimens.<\/p>\n

BASIC FUNCTION<\/strong><\/p>\n

At a semi-technical level, perform simple laboratory testing and\/or prepare specimens for laboratory testing or set up specimens for laboratory testing as well as other laboratory work which supports the operation of a clinical laboratory.<\/p>\n

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Under general supervision, perform simple and qualitative clinical laboratory tests and\/or prepare\/set up specimens for laboratory tests and other laboratory work in support of technologists, faculty and students.<\/p>\n

TYPICAL WORK<\/strong><\/p>\n

Set up bacterial, fungal and viral cultures; set up and monitor herpes cultures; maintain stock cultures; read gram stains; make and stain blood smears;<\/p>\n

Prepare reagents, chemical solutions, culture media or cell cultures according to established procedures;<\/p>\n

Operate laboratory equipment such as electronic balances, microscopes, spectrophotometers, pH meters, autoclaves, metering pumps and centrifuges;<\/p>\n

Participate in demonstrating simple laboratory techniques to students and new employees;<\/p>\n

Perform laboratory specimen processing consisting of receiving, identifying, assigning accession numbers, sorting, preparation and internal laboratory distribution of blood, urine, and other biological specimens;<\/p>\n

Respond to inquiries concerning patient lab values, reference ranges, specimen requirements, procedures, time required for tests, and preparation of specimens to outside labs for analysis;<\/p>\n

Perform data processing and clerical tasks as required;<\/p>\n

Perform the work of a Clinical Laboratory Assistant;<\/p>\n

May perform phlebotomy on patients to obtain laboratory samples;<\/p>\n

Perform related duties as required.<\/p>\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n

High school graduation or equivalent AND one year of chemical, clinical, or public health laboratory experience<\/p>\n

OR<\/p>\n

completion of a laboratory assistant course approved by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.<\/p>\n

Equivalent education and\/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and\/or registration.<\/p>\n
