CLASS SERIES CONCEPT<\/strong><\/p>\n

The primary function is to provide a combination of analysis and technical computer support functions focusing on the planning, acquisition and use of computer hardware and software for an organization\/unit(s). Apply the institution’s technology standards to departmental systems and inform departmental users of those standards.<\/p>\n

This series is distinguished from other computer-related series by its emphasis on developing systems solutions that require understanding of the specific disciplines of the organization\/unit being supported AND performing a combination of hardware, software, database, programming, user training, and\/or networking functions to meet the specific needs of the unit.<\/p>\n

While positions typically function as generalists and include elements of work described in other computing series, they are typified by a blend of duties rather than focusing on any one area such as applications programming, operating systems programming\/support, technical software support, and hardware troubleshooting and repair. Work often involves maintaining or administering one or more local area networks designed for departmental use.<\/p>\n

BASIC FUNCTION<\/strong><\/p>\n

Support and maintain the computer information systems and hardware of an organization\/unit by performing a combination of computer support functions such as data processing, application maintenance, application software support, operating systems, and hardware support.<\/p>\n

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Under general supervision, support the computing needs of an institution\/department\/unit consisting of multiple software applications running in stand alone or networked environments.<\/p>\n

The following components are evaluated when determining the overall function and level of responsibility of the work performed. Each component does not have to be met when deciding if a position is best described by this class; however, positions generally encompass three or more of the following functional areas:<\/p>\n

1. Data Processing and Applications Maintenance<\/p>\n

Apply the specific disciplines of the organization\/unit by using report generators and query tools to manipulate and process data; develop routine spreadsheets and databases using application generators; update and maintain application programs.<\/p>\n

2. Application Software Support<\/p>\n

Provide technical support and instruction to users in the use of various software application systems and provide analysis on how to apply them to the specific discipline(s) of the organization\/unit; write and maintain user documentation; install, update and configure software packages.<\/p>\n

3. Operating Systems Support<\/p>\n

Write operating system command procedures; maintain, modify, and install system level software such as operating systems, device drivers and communications software.<\/p>\n

4. Hardware Support<\/p>\n

Diagnose and resolve hardware problems and refer complex problems to hardware maintenance, software support or vendor support. Install and configure hardware and peripheral devices; assist in testing and evaluating hardware and software products for institution standards.<\/p>\n

TYPICAL WORK<\/strong><\/p>\n

Apply the institution’s technology standards in the support and maintenance of departmental systems; educate departmental users about those standards;<\/p>\n

Meet with users\/clients and provide analysis on how to apply software applications to the specific discipline(s) of the organization\/unit;<\/p>\n

Develop routine spreadsheets and databases using application generators; update and maintain application programs;<\/p>\n

Maintain various system software such as operating systems, backup, inventory, directory maintenance, local software utilities, and printing systems;<\/p>\n

Provide training on software applications and operating systems; write and maintain user documentation;<\/p>\n

Diagnose and resolve hardware problems and refer complex problems to hardware maintenance, software support or vendor support;<\/p>\n

Install and configure software and hardware;<\/p>\n

As a team member, perform systems analysis and program design tasks in determining computer system specifications, developing systems, operational procedures, and developing data models;<\/p>\n

Write simple programs and maintain program modules;<\/p>\n

Assist in testing and evaluating hardware and software products for institution standards;<\/p>\n

Monitor security, capacity and resource management systems\/network;<\/p>\n

May direct the work of others;<\/p>\n

Perform related duties as required.<\/p>\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Two years of experience in programming or computer support services of a technical nature.<\/p>\n

Equivalent education and\/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and\/or registration.<\/p>\n
