CLASS SERIES CONCEPT<\/strong><\/p>\n

Assist dentists or dental students in dental examinations and in the treatment of patients; assist faculty in the instruction of dental students.<\/p>\n

BASIC FUNCTION<\/strong><\/p>\n

Perform routine dental assistant duties.<\/p>\n

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS<\/strong><\/p>\n

First-level class of series. Under direct supervision, prepare patients, operate equipment, sterilize instruments, mix amalgam and assist in the performance of expanded dental duties.<\/p>\n

TYPICAL WORK<\/strong><\/p>\n

Seat patients, adjust chair and prepare patient for dentist; develop, mount and file x-ray films;<\/p>\n

Operate water, air and evacuating equipment;<\/p>\n

Sterilize and prepare instruments for set ups; fill, drain and clean sterilizer; prepare supplies;<\/p>\n

Prepare and mix amalgam, composite, cement and medicaments for restorations; mix pumice for prophylaxis; prepare and mix impression materials;<\/p>\n

Prepare anesthetic syringes;<\/p>\n

Maintain dental records and files; maintain inventory and requisition supplies;<\/p>\n

Clean and maintain dental chair and equipment;<\/p>\n

Demonstrate four-handed instrument exchanges;<\/p>\n

Assist faculty and Dental Assistants II in various fundamental four-handed techniques, such as correct chair positioning and coordinated placement and removal of rubber dam;<\/p>\n

Instruct patients in home care;<\/p>\n

Perform related duties as required.<\/p>\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Completion of a training program for dental assistants; current certification as a dental assistant (CDA) or the ability to obtain same within six months; or six months of dental assistant experience.<\/p>\n

Equivalent education and\/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and\/or registration.<\/p>\n

LEGAL REQUIREMENT<\/strong><\/p>\n

Registration with the State of Washington as a Dental Assistant<\/p>\n
