BASIC FUNCTION<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lead and work with high voltage electricians at the University of Washington to perform journey-level electrical work in the operation and maintenance of a high voltage distribution system.<\/p>\n

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Regularly assign, instruct and check the work of journey high voltage electricians. Positions in this class are distinguished by the requirement to perform skilled operation, maintenance, repair and installation work on high voltage electrical power transmission\/distribution cables and equipment.<\/p>\n

TYPICAL WORK<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lead assigned personnel in the performance of high voltage electrical work;<\/p>\n

Serve as power dispatcher having designated responsibility for performing high voltage switching operations and issuing safe-work clearances;<\/p>\n

Prepare high voltage systems to be worked on by contractors, including de-energizing high voltage equipment, installing protective grounds, issuing line clearances, and monitoring procedures utilized by contractors;<\/p>\n

Assure assigned personnel observe and follow safety precautions and rules; provide safety training to personnel;<\/p>\n

Identify and implement daily operation strategies for campus electrical distribution system to ensure continuous and reliable electrical service;<\/p>\n

Respond to emergency situations such as power outages in order to minimize or prevent loss of property, damage to research activities, or disruption to life safety systems;<\/p>\n

Plan and coordinate electrical shutdowns for maintenance and construction activities;<\/p>\n

Implement maintenance programs;<\/p>\n

Splice various types of high voltage multiphase power cable; perform straight splices, joints for branch lines, and fittings for terminal connections;<\/p>\n

Install, connect, operate and maintain a variety of electrical equipment including primary power distribution\/transmission cables and equipment, portable engine generators, transformers, and high voltage switches;<\/p>\n

Order parts and supplies; prepare, assign and track work orders;<\/p>\n

Develop work plans, methods, and procedures to be followed by trades personnel;<\/p>\n

Perform the duties of an Electrician – High Voltage;<\/p>\n

Perform other duties as required.<\/p>\n

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as a cable splicer AND one year experience as a cable splicer or high voltage electrician;<\/p>\n

OR<\/p>\n

Full journey status as a cable splicer or high voltage electrician AND one year experience performing journey-level cable splicer or high voltage electrician work.<\/p>\n

Equivalent education and\/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and\/or registration.<\/p>\n

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Knowledge of: standard practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment of electrical trade; electrical codes; safety precautions; basic computer skills.<\/p>\n

Ability to: work from blueprints, plans, and sketches; estimate materials and time needed to complete jobs; use hand and power tools.<\/p>\n
